					Q1.1 a How much public funding did your organisation receive in the last financial year 2008-09? Natural England received £264M in Grant in Aid from Defra, our sponsoring Government department, in 2008-09.

In addition, Natural England spent £353m in 2008/9 on behalf of Defra on £2.9bn Rural Development Programme for England 2007-2013 which is funded from Government & EU funding. This work in delivering Environmental Stewardship pays farmers and other land managers to deliver a range of benefits for people and the natural environment.

Q1.1 b What was the total expenditure, including wages, of your organisation in the same period? The total expenditure for 2008-09 was £240m, including wages. The remainder of the £264m referred to in our response to Q1.1a, represents expenditure accounted for in 07-08 and paid for in 08-09.
