Third Sunday of Easter

April 10, 2005

Dear Parishioners, This week we have all felt sadness at the death of our Holy Father, John Paul II. The multitudes that have expressed their sympathy for him signify that he touched so many lives by his holy example and teaching. John Paul II’s love for humanity and individuals has always been a sign of God’s love for us. His life has been rooted in his strong trust of God’s love and mercy and in his love and devotion of the Blessed Mother. May his life teach us to be faithful to Jesus Christ and courageous in the living and professing of our faith. In the coming days the Cardinals will elect a new Pope. John Paul II in the apostolic constitution “Universi Dominici Gregis,” promulgated in 1996 indicates the rules of the election process. He speaks of our part in that process. The Holy Father wrote: “In all cities and other places, at least the more important ones, as soon as news is received of the vacancy of the Apostolic See and, in particular, of the death of the Pope, and following the celebration of his solemn funeral rites, humble and persevering prayers are to be offered to the Lord (see Matthew 21:22; Mark 11:24), that he may enlighten the electors and make them so likeminded in their task that a speedy, harmonious and fruitful election may take place, as the salvation of souls and the good of the whole People of God demand.” Parishioners let us take these words of John Paul II seriously. In these days let us pray with deep trust and confidence that the new Pope truly be the man of God’s choosing. As the Holy Spirit continues to bring life into our faith community, we congratulate the young adults who received the sacrament of confirmation this weekend. May they be faithful witnesses to God and active members of our parish community. Fr. Tom

Having just concluded celebrating the first Easter in six years, NOT in Lawrence, I wanted to write to thank the community of Corpus Christi for the many notes and kinds thoughts that reached me here at St. Mary's and St. Catherine of Siena Parishes. The Liturgies were wonderful here, yet I missed many of the wonderful moments we shared at the Holy Rosary. At the same time, the future is good for us here and I can tell it is also for your wonderful new parish in Lawrence. May God's blessings be yours in abundance this Easter time and always. Fr. Third Sunday of Easter

April 10, 2005

Just a friendly reminder Please plan to attend to a meeting of the Eucharist Ministers this Wednesday, April 13th in 7:00 pm at the Rectory with Father Tom. Researchers at Boston University invite you to participate in a survey about how you have been affected by the parish reorganization and closing process in the Archdiocese of Boston. The survey is completely anonymous and takes about 20 minutes. It may be completed on the Internet by visiting. Your assistance is an invaluable resource. Thank you. Sharing Our Joy by Fr. Jeffrey Day Have you ever told something exciting to a young child and watched his or her reaction? They find it almost impossible to contain their joy and they want to share the news with others. Today’s Gospel passage ends in this fashion, but at the beginning of our story we hear about Jesus walking on the road to Emmaus with two of His disciples. He doesn’t reveal His identity. Instead Jesus allowed the disciples to recount everything that happened concerning His death and the empty tomb. Jesus responded to their story by saying, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” We shouldn’t think that Jesus is mad at the disciples; remember that He was the one stringing them along. Rather, Jesus’ reaction is that of a loving mentor trying to open the eyes of His pupils. But their eyes still were not open, even when He recounted to them all the Scripture passages that referred to Him. What finally opened their eyes was the breaking of bread with Jesus. Their reaction was to travel to Jerusalem and share their discovery with the Apostles. This is what we are called to do as well, especially in the Easter season. Just as a child shares his joy, the excitement of the Resurrection and our own encounter with the risen Christ in the Eucharist cannot be contained.
