NEW HIGH PERFORMANCE CENTER- Thanks to a designated grant from the United States
Olympic Committee and the Louisiana Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, USA Weightlifting is proud to announce that the Louisiana State University Shreveport Development Center will now become the first USA Weightlifting High Performance Center. Through this program, grant money is available to our top athletes to assist in room, and board. High level applicants that choose to attend LSUS will receive in state tuition. Housing may also be offered to high level applicants that do not choose to enroll at LSUS or have already completed their higher education. Dr. Kyle Pierce will be in charge of the program and is a certified Senior International Coach. The center already has many of our top athletes training including Kendrick Farris (85 kg Olympian and American Record holder). Last year the program also included 2000 Olympian Cara Heads 69 kg and the 2008 top Junior lifter Aaron Adams 62 kg. The Olympic Weightlifting training facility is located in the Health and Physical Education Building. The training facility has been remodeled to include 15 platforms with rubber matting flush with the floor and more than 15 sets of International Weightlifting Federation certified weights. There are plenty of squat racks and pulling blocks and even another complete weight room with plenty of exercise equipment. The Weightlifting program at LSUS is defined as being under the Athletic Department and, among other benefits, receives the sports medicine services available to all athletes including a full time trainer on-site. This service is made
possible by Willis-Knighton Health Systems. All funding in this combined program of the USOC, LSUS, and the Louisiana Governor’s Council of Physical Fitness is earmarked directly to athlete support and will not go to staff or administration.
USA Weightlifting hopes to use this project as a model for other Developmental and High Performance Centers around the nation, and that this will be the first of others to come. NOTICE - Possible WEBSITE DISRUPTION the week of February 9-13, 2009- We have
received notification that the USOC will be working on various National Governing Body (NGB) websites next week, and that there may be possible disruption, off and on, throughout that period. Please keep this in mind if you need to register for a coaching course with a fast-approaching deadline (especially the Sports Performance Coach course at the Olympic Training Center - the deadline for that is Wednesday, February 11th). Meet directors - this may also affect people who have to register for membership, or just print their current membership card, before lifting in your meet. With this in mind, please make sure you have plenty of membership applications available at your meet. If an athlete cannot present a membership card to show their membership is current, make sure the athlete completes the application and pays for membership before you allow them to lift. If it turns out that the athlete was, in fact, already a current member, we will either prorate their membership with extra time, or we will refund the payment they gave you at the meet. The application can be found on the home page of our website, when you click on the MEMBERSHIP tab. Print as many copies as you think you might need. If anyone has questions or concerns, please contact the National Office.
Reminders: United Airlines Discount for USA Weightlifting Members - For an additional 2-10%

Please note – this discount only applies to select USA Weightlifting events – it cannot be used for everyday travel. The United Airlines Olympic Desk has more information. Call them today!
