COPIED FROM NEWSLETTER 25 NOVEMBER 2008 – If you have already replied and/or paid your accommodation deposit then disregard – If you have not actioned yet then please reply as soon as possible. World Masters Games – Sydney
Plans are now underway for the World Masters Games in Sydney in October 2009. We have received a lot of interest from players and it is now time for everyone to start thinking about whether they are intending on playing and getting their travel plans organised. We have put together some information for participants from the WMG site. If you want to check out the detailed information available on the World Masters Games please visit the site – www.2009worldmasters.com Please complete the attached Redbacks WMG Participant and Accommodation Interest Form and return with your accommodation deposit. As we anticipate fielding a number of teams again it is important that players and their companions get their registration and accommodation requirements in to the club in ample time for everything to be organised. The close off for registrations on the WMG site is 31 July 09, however Redbacks will be closing off our team registrations on 31st MARCH 2009. This will then allow us 6 months to find players to fill any vacancies we may have in teams. It is up to individual players to ensure they have finalised their registration payments by this date. Games Registration Fees Participants may enter the Games as either a Competitor, Accompanying Person or as Team Personnel. (Please note some participants have already registered when they took advantage of the early bird close prior to 31 July 2008). The following fees now apply to each category for those who are still to register: Competitor Registration Fee AUD $220 Accompanying Person Registration Fee AUD $110 Team Personnel Registration Fee AUD $110 Games Registration entitles you to a range of benefits, including:  A Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Accreditation Pass and sports bag  Free public transport* on Sydney's extensive network of trains, buses and ferries (*Excludes Airport Train)  An allocated seat at the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Opening Ceremony  Entry into the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Closing Ceremony  Access to the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games social hubs located across the city  Entry into the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Health and Lifestyle Expo  A souvenir-style Sydney 2009 World Masters Games commemorative program  A discount booklet for use at selected Sydney restaurants and tourist attractions Registered Competitors also receive:  Entry into your Sydney 2009 World Masters Games sport competition  A certificate of competitor participation in the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games  A program for each Sydney 2009 World Masters Games sports competition entered  Access to sports injury services at Sydney 2009 World Masters Games venues Please complete the Register A Participant Form attached to newsletter and return to Redbacks for processing with your payment ASAP. need to manage their own registration on line. All participants registered through Redbacks will have their photo taken when they collect their Games accreditation at the Games Village in Sydney. Redbacks Umpire Contribution $40 per player – we are required to provide non-playing umpires for all of our teams competing at the WMG. Redbacks provide accommodation and registration for our umpires and all Redbacks players will be required to contribute towards the costs of securing these umpires for the event. Accounts will be issued for Umpire Contribution and this is payable to Redbacks. Attached to this newsletter is the WMG Sport Information Guide for Softball. Special note should be made that the competition dates are noted as Sunday 11th to Sunday 18th October 2009. It is understood the opening ceremony will still be held on Saturday. In addition there are 3 softball venues that the games are to be played at: Blacktown Olympic Park Softball Centre, Eastern Road, Rooty Hill Kelso Park North Softball Complex, Henry Lawson Drive, Milperra Jacqui Osmond Softball Centre, Station Street, Warwick Farm Each of these venues is located very close to public transport so participants can take advantage of the free trains and bus transportation available under your games accreditation. There will only be 2 age categories – 35+ and 45+ and at this stage, depending on the number of teams registering, it would appear they will be looking to play 35+ men & women at Kelso Park & Blacktown Olympic Park and 45+ men & women at Jacqui Osmond Softball Centre & Blacktown Olympic Park, with all finals being played at the Blacktown Olympic Park. Also attached is the proposed Softball Daily Sport Schedule – however this may change as the event draws closer. Social activities for the 2009 WMG include, opening & closing ceremonies and a Games welcome party (free to accredited persons). In addition there will be outdoor film festival and Oktoberfest for which a small entry fee will be charged and tickets for a Games Ball will go on sale in early 2009. The majority of events will be held at either Sydney Olympic Park or the Central Business District of Sydney, however ClubsNSW will also be establishing social hubs across the city where competitors will receive a warm welcome, affordable meals and entertainment. Sydney Olympic Park is located at Homebush Bay off the M4 Great Western Highway but is easily accessible via train to the Olympic Park Station. Accommodation: Accommodation has been a little more complicated than our normal events. As with previous events we try to source venues that can accommodate our large team numbers so that our participants can be closely located. There are a number of factors we have been considering when looking – the fact that there are 3 playing venues & the games village, easy access to public transport, kitchen & laundry facilities availability, access to social functions and a venue which could accommodate our requirements. We have been liaising with the WMG Accommodation organisers in an effort to secure suitable accommodation to meet our needs however we have found that the majority of venues available are motel style accommodation and are not readily accessible to public transport. In addition while we expected the cost of accommodation in Sydney would be dearer due to the location we have found the pricing through the Games Accommodation somewhat dearer again. In short, we have been lucky to source a contact which can provide us with 4.5 star apartment style accommodation at Quest World Square at the same price being offered for standard motel rooms through the WMG Accommodation organisers. This venue is located in the heart of Sydney, very central to the Sydney Central Business District which is one of the social venues. The only limitation this location has is that there is very limited car parking available on site – they will advise costs for secure car park stations which are closely located to the venue should participants wish to drive, however we are recommending using the public transport for this trip. The Redbacks Accommodation Package will cost $875 per person. The package provides as follows:            One Bedroom Apartments – bedding configuration is limited to Queen Bed or Double Bed & Double Sofa Bed – basically rooms will be limited to 2 occupants (either a couple or 2 singles). Fully equipped kitchen facilities Private Laundry facilities Iron & ironing board Air conditioning Outdoor balcony Indoor/Outdoor Pool Gym In room safe Close to Central Railway Station 4.5 star rating

The package they have offered us is for 10 nights which means check in Friday 9 th October 2009 and check out Monday 19th October 2009. The softball does not start till Sunday but as the package was for 10 nights it gives participants an opportunity to have a look around. Please complete the attached Redbacks WMG Participant and Accommodation Interest Form and return with your accommodation deposit.

In order for Redbacks to secure the required number of rooms to cover our participants we have devised a payment plan for the accommodation. Participants can pay in full if that is preferred but at a minimum please ensure you meet the installment payment dates so that your booking is not affected. Total cost will be $875/person. $100/person $200/person $300/person $275/person Deposit Installment 1 Installment 2 Installment 3 Due 12th December 08 Due 13th February 09 Due 17th April 09 Due 10th July 09

We can only secure rooms where deposits have been paid, and in the event that an individual has to withdraw from the event please note that a refund can only been given in the accommodation once a replacement has been found for the accommodation. Participants are welcome to source their own accommodation arrangements through alternate means should they wish. It would be appreciated if you could advise Redbacks so that we still have your down to include in the team roster. If you have any questions on the accommodation please don’t hesitate to contact Jenny. It would be advisable for those who are intending to fly to also consider looking into flight arrangements early to secure good deals.

Tweed Tournament Congratulations to the Redbacks 35 Ladies on their win at the Tweed Phantoms Masters Tournament in January. The team was invited to attend the tournament and participated in the B Grade competition. After losing their final round game to Tweed on Sunday morning 2 – 1 the team placed 2nd in the finals round. The team successfully beat Lightning Strikes to proceed to the Grand Final against Tweed Phantoms.
