Thanks - Pastor Renee Pastor's August 2007 Newsletter Article One exciting event of our church this August is the 10th Churchwide Assembly of our ELCA! Our whole ELCA meets every other year to address the ministry and business of our whole church. There are always ideas and business referred from individual Synods, including our own, and elections of some sort. This year election will be held for presiding Bishop and Secretary of our ELCA. Our present Bishop, Pastor Mark Hanson, is eligible and willing to be re-elected. Our present Secretary, Pastor Lowell Almen, who's served as Bishop of the ELCA since its beginning in 1987, is retiring. P P The second Churchwide Assembly I attended as a clergy voting member was after I returned to good old South Dakota! This one was in 1993 at Kansas City, Missouri. I'll always remember breaking my toe while doing my last minute packing the morning I left! I remember my toe hurting a lot but not knowing I'd broken it until I took my shoes off that night in my hotel room! So, needless to say, I was hobbling around and putting my foot up whenever I could! Kansas City is rather warm in August too! My roommate this time was from North Carolina. This was quite fun, to hear a different accent and learn about a place I'd never been! Again, Herbert Chilstrom was still our Bishop. This time things were more "high-tech" with electronic voting and knowing results almost instantaneously! This time I felt a better handle on issues and voting procedures. Again, the chance to meet and be with the many interesting and diverse people of our church was wonderful and the worship aweinspiring! If you have a computer or access to one (come over to church!) you can already read and see details of this upcoming Assembly, August 6-11. (Women, there's a great article about it in our July Lutheran Women Today. There's also information in The Lutheran.) Once the assembly begins you can see updates several times daily about what's happened or will be happening. The website is www.elca.org. Scroll to the bottom and click on the green box marked "Churchwide Assembly 2007". As a church we also receive printed pre and post assembly reports. If you're interested in seeing them, see me. U U U U HTU UTH This is the 10th Assembly of our ELCA and also its 20th Anniversary! I must be getting old (or older?!) as I remember the formation of our ELCA! I was excited then and continued to be. I'm grateful for our Church and, by God's grace, believe we have an exciting future ahead! P P P P I've also been very privileged to have attended two ELCA Churchwide Assemblies as a clergy voting member. My first assembly was in 1989 when I was serving in North Dakota. This was my first experience of a BIG event like this! It was a bit overwhelming and very exhilarating! The overwhelming part was all the reading to complete before the assembly - I think about 10 pounds worth or more! The days were long and the assembly itself was a week in length! The exhilarating part was being with so many Lutherans from so many different places as well as the inspiring and varied worship services and styles. We worshipped morning, noon and night and some in between! That assembly was held in our Church's headquarters - Chicago, Illinois (this year's assembly is being held in Chicago too). Our Bishop then was our 1st Bishop - Herbert Chilstrom. My roommate was from Medina, North Dakota. We voted with red, green and white cards back then as we do at our South Dakota Synod Assembly. P P This years Assembly's theme sums it all up very well: "Living in God's Amazing Grace: Thanks be to God!" Please pray for our Church as it meets. Pray for our voting members and leaders. Together with you on the Journey of God's Amazing Grace! There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours, or days. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else. Your wealth, fame, and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed. Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear. So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and todo lists will expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away. It won't matter where you came from, or on what side of the tracks you lived, at the end. It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant $ Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant. So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured? What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got, but what you gave. What will matter is not your success, but your significance. What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught. What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example. What will matter is not your competence, but your character. What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone. What will matter is not your memories, but the memories that live in those who loved you. What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what. Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident. It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice. Choose to live a life that matters. In these hot days of August, we may pine for an icy winter breeze! It is important to know how to take care of our bodies in times of prolonged heat-waves. Here are some tips on preventing heatrelated illness from the Department of Health and Human Services: • Drink more fluids (non-alcoholic). If you are on a fluid restricted diet, check with your doctor first. • Limit liquids that have caffeine, or large amounts of sugar. These can make you lose more fluids. • Stay indoors and, if possible, in an airconditioned room. If you don’t have airconditioning, go to a public place that is cool. Even a few hours at the mall or the library can help you cool down. • If you don’t have air-conditioning, a cool shower or bath will help. • Wear light, loose fitting clothing. • NEVER leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle. • Some people are at higher risk for heatrelated illness. Check on these people: o Infants and young children. o People 65 years and older. o People who have mental illness. o Those who are physically ill, especially with heart disease or high blood pressure. (For more information on extreme heat survival: www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat or call the CDC public response hotline at (888) 246-2675.)
