									Learning How to Canoe Safely
If you or your child is interested in learning how to
canoe, this is an exciting time in both of your lives.
Canoeing is a fun and exciting outdoor sport that
the whole family can participate in.

If your child wants to learn how to canoe, you
should consider enrolling him or her in Stony Brook
Summer Camp. At Stony Brook Summer Camp, your
child will have many opportunities to participate in
outdoors activities, including canoeing.

Before you enroll your child, however, you will want to go over certain safety tips with him or her so
that they stay safe while they are canoeing at camp. Canoeing can be fun, but it can also be very
dangerous.

Always Remember Safety First

It is important that you emphasize safety when you begin talking with your child about the adventures
of canoeing. One of the first things you should do with your child is to have them take an online on-
water course.

These types of courses help children and adults
understand how to be safe while canoeing and doing
other on-water activities. Although some of the
material covered in the courses may seem like
common sense, it is very important that the
information is heard and understood by all the people
who intend on going canoeing or participating in on-
                                                         water activities.

Although you will probably not be attending summer
camp with your child, going through the online course
with them will be beneficial for you as a parent as
well. You will most likely go canoeing in the future with your family, so you could use the information
you learn in the online course to help you for that future time.

Here are a few other tips when you are helping your child prepare to go canoeing. Emphasize to your
child the importance of wearing a life jacket.
Lifejackets Should Always Be Worn

Life jackets are extremely crucial because they can literally save your life. If your canoe tips over or
capsizes, that life jacket will help you to stay afloat in the water.

Even if you know how to swim, there is no way to predict how rough the waters will be when you fall in.
Even if you are a good swimmer, you may not be
able to stay afloat when your boat tips over.

This is why it is so important to wear a life jacket at
all times. Many children think that life jackets are
bulky and ugly, but you must help them get over
this idea.

Even if you can’t help them get over the idea that
their jacket is ugly, you should still make them wear
it. It doesn’t not matter what it looks like, because it
could save their life.

If the waters your child will be canoeing in are going to be especially cold, they will need to learn how to
protect themselves in very cold water. Very cold water can be extremely detrimental to the human
body.

There are several different types of things you can do to make sure that your child is prepared to attend
summer camp and to go canoeing and participate in other on-water activities.
