Why You Should NOT be Using Visine

Visine – A Brilliant, yet Useless, Product
Why do people use Visine? To get the red out, right? But why are the eyes red? Visine doesn’t care.
It eliminates the redness by constricting the blood vessels in the eye.
And what happens when the Visine wears off? You guessed it . . . the redness comes right back.
Why? Because Visine doesn’t address the cause of the problem, it addresses the symptom:
Imagine for a second you have a splinter in your finger. And your finger hurts, it’s red and swollen
around the area of the splinter. But instead of removing the splinter, you choose to take Tylenol for
the pain. Your finger doesn’t hurt quite as much, but the splinter is still there. And when the Tylenol
wears off, it hurts again. That’s how Visine works. I addresses the symptom, not the source.
And it’s brilliant! Because people keep buying and using Visine. Every day. Sometimes for years!
I’ve had patients tell me they’ve used Visine every day for 10 years!! And yet they never stop and
wonder WHY they have to keep using it!
Can you think of another situation that involves your health where you would just keep doing the
same thing over and over even though the problem returned on a daily basis? Not when PAIN is
involved, I can tell you that.
Visine is not the answer.
There are many reasons why the eyes get red. Redness is simply dilation of the blood vessels within
the white part of the eye, making the surface appear red. Common causes of red eyes include
extremely dry air, dry eyes, sun exposure, dust, foreign body, an allergic reaction, or an eye
infection, to name a few.
So people turn to Visine to reduce the redness. But prolonged use of Visine can lead to something
called ‘rebound redness’. Rebound redness is a side effect of overuse of eye drops intended to
relieve red eyes. Tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride, the active ingredient, serves as a vasoconstrictor;
meaning it shrinks down the blood vessels, thus removing the appearance of redness.
Visine works quickly to reduce the redness, but does not eliminate the cause of the redness.
Rebound redness results because the blood vessels in the eye dilate as the effects of the
medication in the drops wears off. Overuse of eye drops to relieve the symptom without correcting
the cause sets up a cycle of dependency and misuse.
In fact, on the Visine page on Wikipedia it clearly states:
Use of this product can cause a rebound effect causing the redness to
worsen. Prolonged use can cause blood vessels to be dilated for an extended
period of time. Use should be limited unless specified by a doctor.
Eye drops should be used only as directed, and are not intended for long-term use. According to
MayoClinic.com, when over used, eye drops containing vasoconstrictors can cause permanent
redness and damage to the blood vessels in the eye.
Bottom line: Don’t Use Visine!
Meet with your eye care professional, figure out what’s CAUSING the redness, and address it! Your
eyes will thank me later?
By the way, the everything above applies to Clear Eyes as well.
