                                                  Preface


Engineering design and optimization are important tasks and activities that are essential for the success of
product development and application. In general, they cover two aspects of research topics, including those
that are directly related to the design and optimization of the engineered products, and those that are related
to the design and optimization of the engineering processes; where the latter are essentially relevant to the
formation or implementation of the products, namely, the manufacturing processes. A more detailed list of
the relevant topics may be summarized as Engineering Design Theory and Methodology, Product Design and
Development, Simulation and Engineering Optimization, Manufacturing Systems Modeling and
Optimization, as well as Machining and Materials Processing Technology, and so forth.

To provide a forum for researchers and engineers, professionals and graduate students to exchange ideas and
showcase their latest research findings, this International Conference on Engineering Design and
Optimization 2010 (ICEDO 2010) has now been in reality. It is jointly organized by Ningbo University,
Zhejiang Province, China; University of Wollongong, Australia, and Ningbo Institute of Technology of
Zhejiang University, China. Since the first Call-For-Paper announcement from its organizing committee, this
great event has attracted many attentions. After a rigorous peer-review and revision process, we have
eventually compiled a two-volume conference proceedings consisting of as many as 349 papers!

This conference is a joint effort from all the contributors, including the authors, the reviewers, the conference
organizers, etc. The organizing committee would like to thank all the authors for their valuable contributions
and the reviewers for the constructive comments. Thanks are also due to the members of the International
Advisory Committee, and to the keynote speakers, in particular to those who have come all the way from
Canada, Australia, Singapore, etc. Special thanks are given to the conference program committee, to the
conference secretariat, as well as to a lot of other colleagues and students, for their hard work and much effort
in making the whole event a great success!

Keynote Speaker 1: A/Prof. Yongsheng Ma, University of Alberta, Canada




               Dr. Yongsheng Ma is a tenured associate professor of University of Alberta. He joined
Department of Mechanical Engineering since 2007. Before that Dr. Ma had been a professor with Nanyang
Technological University, Singapore since 2000. He has worked in the field of engineering IT as a lecturer,
trainer, IT consultant, R&D manager and a professor for the past 18 years. His main research areas include
engineering life-cycle management, feature-based product and process modeling. Dr. Ma owns BEng
(TsingHua, China 1986), MSc and PhD degrees (Manchester University, 1990 and 1994). He has registered
as a Professional Engineers of Alberta since 2009.

Title: Engineering Design Interoperability and Productivity - A Challenge in
Engineering IT
Abstract: Engineering IT is a leading research field supporting concurrent engineering design productivity
and quality improvement towards key industrial technology upgrading. Nowadays, IT tools have been
applied in almost all the processes from conceptual design, to process analysis, manufacturing, project
management. The interoperability and system integration has been a challenge and demands a systematic
solution. Paradigm of traditional feature-based design and engineering has been shifted towards flexible,
associative, multi-facets, fine-grain, dynamic, and life-cycle-oriented advanced engineering informatics. The
new engineering IT approach is proposed in this presentation to implement IT projects in various engineering
projects with system integration and interoperability considered.
Problem: What are features? What is the concept of interoperability? What are the feature-based engineering
IT solutions? Associative features and their enormous applications in engineering IT are to be introduced.
Collaborative network engineering is emphasized.

Keynote Speaker 2: Prof. Xu Han, Hunan University, PRC




Prof. Xu Han was born in June 1968, and received his PhD of mechanical engineering from National
University of Singapore. He is the Dean of the College of Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering. He is the
distinguished professor of Cheung Kong Scholars Program. His research focuses on computational reverse
technologies and engineering optimization. He has been |PI of many research projects, including the National
Defense 973 Research Program of China, the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the
National 973 Basic Research Sub-Program of China, etc. He has published one book in English and more
than 150 technique papers. As an invited or specially invited speaker, he has attended many important
academic meetings domestically and abroad. As the first winner, he has won various prizes such as the first
prize of the Science and Technology Advancement Award of Hunan Province, the GM innovation talents
award in the automotive field of Chinese colleges and universities, and the Science and Technology Award of
Hunan Province for Young Scientists.

Title: Techniques of structural optimization design for complicated equipments
Abstract: Systematic studies are conducted for the digitization modeling and optimization design
techniques of complicated equipments, and a series of computational models and solution algorithms are
developed at the aspects of nonlinear inverse problems, uncertain optimization and multiobjective
optimization. The relevant techniques have been successfully applied to multiple industrial departments such
as Mechanical engineering, Vehicle engineering and Aero-space, etc. An effective technique has been
proposed based on the inverse problem theories to realize the precise modeling for complicated equipments,
in which the problems from experimental measurement and numerical ill-posedness are well settled. The key
mechanical and structural parameters can be precisely identified, which thus can provide reliable inputs for
our simulation models and subsequent optimization design. In some practical applications such as the
vibration environment predication of aero-space structures, parameter identification in projectile-target
systems and advanced composite materials, the above digitalization modeling technique all plays an
important roll. We also develop an efficient multiobjective optimization technique for complicated
equipments, where the two important issues associated with the solution precision and large-scale
computation are a certain extent resolved. An optimal design considering multiple requirements and functions
can be obtained for complicated equipments within limited resources, and this technique has been applied to
the automobile body design for dynamic and static properties, crashworthiness design of commercial
vehicles, structural optimization of high-end grinding machines, etc. An uncertain structural optimization
technique is also developed for complicated equipments, in which we realize the uncertainty quantification in
an extremely complex system and additionally solve the low-efficiency problem caused by the nesting
optimization. Our technique can ensure a high reliability for equipments in some extreme cases, and it has
been applied to the design of automobile die, automobile crashworthiness analysis, analysis and design of
special defensive equipments, etc.
Keynote Speaker 3: A/Prof. Weihua Li, University of Wollongong, Australia




Dr Weihua Li received his B. E. and M. E. degrees from University of Science and Technology of China, and
Ph. D. degree from Nanyang Technological University Singapore. He was with the School of Mechanical and
Production Engineering of Nanyang Technological University as a research fellow from 2001 to 2003. He
has been with the School of Mechanical, Materials and Mechatronic Engineering as a Lecturer (2003-2005),
Senior Lecturer (2006-2009), and Associate Professor (2010 -).
Dr Li is internationally recognized for his work. He did pioneering work in systematically investigating
rheological and mechanical properties of magneto- rheological materials. He has been successfully securing
more than 22 research grants from a number of funding agencies, such as Australian Research Council,
Australian Academy of Science, University of Wollongong, etc. He has published more than 125 technical
articles in refereed international journals and conferences. Professor Li is currently an Associate Editor of the
journal of Smart Materials & Structures. He also sits on the Editorial Boards of the ‘Smart Materials
Research’, ‘Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering China’, and ‘Transactions of Nonlinear Science and
Complexity’. He serves as the reviewer of more than 30 journals and also chairs a number of conferences.

Title: Magnetorheology and Sensing Capability of Graphite based MR Elastomers
Abstract: MR elastomers are smart materials that their mechanical and electrical properties can be
controlled by external magnetic fields. Such materials have potential application in developing intelligent
devices. This research aims to develop a new MR elastomer with graphite as additives and characterize its
field dependence of magnetorheology and sensing capabilities. The research consists of five major tasks: (a)
fabrication of both isotropic and anisotropic graphite MR elastomers with different graphite weight fractions;
(b) characterization of the both steady and dynamic properties of such new MR elastomers; (c) observation of
their microstructures and study of the relationship between microstructures and mechanical properties; (d)
investigation of sensing capabilities via experimental and theoretical approaches; and (e) design and
development of a force sensor working with the new MR elastomers.
Keynote Speaker 4: Prof. Zhiwu Han, Jilin University, PRC




Dr. Han Zhiwu is a professor in School of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Jilin University, and is a
Vice-Director of Key Laboratory of Bionic Engineering of Ministry of Education, P. R. China. He got the
Trans-Century Talents by Chinese Ministry of Education, China. He is General Secretary of Terrain-machine
System Brach of CSAM, a member of Materials and Manufacturing Technology Branch of CSAM, and a
Life Member of AAAE. He is engaging in Mechanical Engineering, and Engineering Bionics, and his major
research fields are Bionic Theory and Technology of Machine and Functional Surface.

He has engaged in 30 projects, and has published more than 100 papers in some famous journals, including
80 papers cited in SCI, EI, ISTP. He had been a visiting scholar in the University of Oxford for one year. He
also had been a visiting scholar in the University of Nottingham for three months.

Title: Functional Surface Biomimetics in Machinery System: Challenge and Application

Abstract: The phenomenon of damage and invalidation in component surfaces of machinery system
occurred widely, which led to its efficiency decreasing and economic loss increasing. Some traditional
methods were adopted to solve such problems, which made effect to some extent. Many investors and
researchers are engaging in looking for new methods to solve such problems.
The living creatures gave hints to us. Some animals have significant functional surface which made them
have good characteristics through evolution over millions of years. Such characteristics are anti-adhesion,
resistance reduction, anti-wear, anti-fatigue and so on. The functional surfaces of some animals with good
characteristics were chosen as examples to design component surface of machinery system, which changed
the performance of the components successfully.

In this talk, the mechanism of functional surface changing the performance of the components was discussed
carefully. The typical animal’s functional surfaces were investigated, and their morphology pictures were
illustrated. Some successful examples of bionic functional surface applied in machinery system obtained in
Jilin University were reviewed, and some experimental results were explained also.
Keynote Speaker 5: Prof. George Chiu, Purdue University, USA




George T.-C. Chiu is a Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Computer
Engineering (by courtesy) at the Purdue University. He received the B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering
from the National Taiwan University in 1985 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering
from the University of California at Berkeley, in 1990 and 1994, respectively. Before joining Purdue in 1996,
he was an R&D engineer at the Hewlett-Packard Company. His current research interests are mechatronics
and dynamic systems and control with application to modeling and control of digital imaging and printing
systems, motion and vibration control and perception, human motor control and digital fabrication. Dr. Chiu
has authored and co-authored more than 140 journal and refereed conference papers. He received the 2010
IEEE Transactions on Control System Technology Outstanding Paper Award and the 2010 Purdue
Engineering Service and Engagement Excellence Award. He is also the co-inventor of 3 US patents with US
and Korean patent applications. Dr. Chiu is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the ASME
Dynamic Systems and Control Division and an associate editor for the Journal of Electronic Imaging and the
IFAC Journal of Control Engineering Practice. He also serve on the Board of Directors of the Shuttleworth,
Inc. Professor Chiu is a member of IEEE, ASME, and IS&T

Title: Maintain Color Consistency – Modeling and Control of a Two-Component
Xerographic Development Process

Abstract: Electrophotography, also known as xerography, is the marking process used in laser printers,
copiers and majority of the digital presses. It utilizes two electrostatic fields to transport micron sized charged
toner particles from toner supply to a photoconductive media to form a toner image and then to the output
media to form the printed image. The development process refers to the process of transporting toner
particles from the supply to the photoconductive media that has been exposed by a pulsed laser. It is one of
the most complex and important step in the xerography since the artifacts resulted from this step cannot be
removed and will likely be accentuated during the subsequent transport and fusing process. After a brief
introduction of the current market and technology analysis, we will first present the development of a bilinear
Weiner-type control-oriented model of the development process. The control-oriented model successfully
predicted/explained the performance degradation that was observed during operations. Given the limited
availability of actuators, process control has limited authority to compensate for the degradation of toner
particle developability, which results in service call and downtime. In the second part of the talk, we will
present the formulation and the numerical and analytical solution of a constrained optimization problem to
develop a process control strategy that will maximize the time between service call while maintain acceptable
image quality.
