   1.2 Definitions

For the purposes of this report, the following timeframes apply:

              Forecast Period: 2013 to 2023

The following are definitions of military expenditure

Capital expenditure (capex) covers research and development (R&D), procurement, maintenance,
transportation, and the storage of weaponry and other equipment. It also includes expenditure on
aircraft and aero-engines, heavy and medium vehicles, naval equipment, and expenditure on the
purchase of land, construction plants, and machinery.

The following are definitions of categories:

CBRN detection segment consists of equipment and systems which aim at establishing the release
or presence of a CBRN substance in a given area or location. These systems allow for continuous
monitoring to either prevent a CBRN incident or to allow for early warning in the event of its
               happening.
CBRN protection segment consists of equipment and systems which aid in preventing CBRN
threats and hazards from having an adverse effect on personnel, equipment, critical assets, and
               facilities.
CBRN decontamination segment consists of equipment and systems which aid in reduction or
removal of CBRN contamination so they are no longer considered hazards.
CBRN disposal consists of processes and systems that aid in the disposal of CBRN substances in
a manner that neutralizes all harmful effects of these substances and renders them unusable.
CBRN simulation consists of processes and systems that help to make CBRN respondents and
emergency teams aware of the various skills and knowledge required for CBRN defense. Systems
such as simulators enable team members to experience CBRN incidents and accordingly take
decisions and actions. This segment includes spending on simulators as well as for training
               exercises.

                                                                                                                    4
INTRODUCTION

     The following are miscellaneous definitions:

Network-Centric Warfare (NCW) focuses on the effective linking and networking of forces dispersed
across the battlefield, enabling the real-time transfer of information to generate a clear situational
             awareness, resulting in combat effectiveness.
Asymmetric Warfare is a type of conflict in which a weaker force exploits the weaknesses of a
better-aligned and technologically superior enemy by adopting strategies and tactics to offset its
deficiencies. Examples of asymmetric warfare include guerrilla warfare, insurgency, terrorism, and
             urban warfare.
