TSS – 8 sensors (2 per module) PTM – 10 sensors (2 per module + 2 in/out cooling) HM – 4 sensors (1 per module)

• Sensors – EB: 360 + 144 + 288
• PTM – Precision temperature monitoring: • 10 sensors per SM; NTC thermistors from Betatherm. • 20 reference sensors in CMS (accessible for calibration). • HM – Humidity monitoring: • 4 sensors per SM; sensor type to be selected from irradiation tests (in progress at CERN IRRAD-2, ECAL-Tracker collab.). • 10 reference sensors in CMS (accessible for calibration). • TSS – Temperature safety system: • 8 sensors per SM; sensor type to be finally defined by the VINCA Belgrade group.

• Sensors – EE: 80 + 32 + 64
• The same sensor types and numbers as for the EB SM are planned for the EE quadrant: 10 + 4 + 8. • Radiation hardness has to be verified, since the EE fluence/dose estimates are 25-100 times more than that of EB (irradiation tests are in progress, CERN IRRAD-2 , ECAL-Tracker collab)

PTM sensor probes Precision temperature monitoring (PTM):
Surface probe – SM grid / thermal screen: 8 per SM. Construction: Aluminum piece (17 x 10 x 6 mm); to be fixed with 2x M2.5 screws on the grid or thermal screen surface. Location: in the center of each module (grid / th.screen sides); defined for the grid (SM0) – see the drawings by Frederic Mossiere in the next slide. Location on the thermal screen should be finally agreed with the laser monitoring team.
Immersion probe – SM IN/OUT cooling pipes: 2 per SM. Construction: St.steel tube (length = 55 mm; inner/outer dia = 3/4 mm); to be immersed into the cooling water flow. Location: on the SM’s entry/exit cooling pipes – see the drawings by F.Mossiere in the next slide.

• Temperature safety system (TSS)

DCS cabling – SM/Dee (2)
• A single twisted pair runs from each sensor to the patch panel. (After the patch panel two pairs, 4-wire connection, are foreseen for PTM and possibly TSS.)

• Pairs count / cable length: • PTM -- 10 pairs • HM -- 4 pairs • TSS -- 8 pairs

• Cable type – the same for all three applications: • Section 0.13 – 0.22 mm2. • Rad.resistant insulation.

• Patch panel connectors -- the same type for all three applications: • Rad.resistant insulation. • Crimping contacts.

DCS cabling (SM/Dee) – sensor cables
EB SM: Max Dose = 3 x 103 Gy

 1.5 x 104 Gy (safety factor = 5)

PE (polyethylene) insulated cables are OK (resistance = 10 5 Gy); readily available from CERN stores. EE Dee: Max Dose = 8 x 104 Gy

 4 x 105 Gy (safety factor = 5)

PE cables are not resistant enough – use PA, PAI, PEI, PI, … not available at CERN – contact manufacturers/distributors. Solution – use rad.resistant cable (PA, PAI, PEI, PI, …) for both EB and EE. Total: 2 – 4 km for all DCS applications (PTM, HM, TSS). Preliminary offers: 2 –7 K EUR.

DCS cabling (SM/Dee) – connectors Patch panel connectors – SM / Dee
EB SM: Max Dose = 4 x 102 Gy EE Dee: Max Dose = 1 x 103 Gy  2 x 103 Gy (safety factor = 5)

 5 x 103 Gy (safety factor = 5)

Solution –
use rad.resistant connector (PE, PA, PC, PEEK, PAI, PEI, PI, …) for both EB and EE. Burndy Quickmate rectangular plastic connector is the current candidate; insulation/construction material is nylon (PA). Cost estimate: 15 K CHF (EB+EE; + spares, + tooling).

Conclusion - problems
• PTM sensors should be installed in the SM “mechanical” assembly stage – starts very soon! • Hence we need to:
• • • • • finalize PTM probe constructions (surface and immersion probes). order PTM sensors (100K NTC thermistors, Betatherm). order cables for SM/Dee internal cabling (rad.resistant). finalize patch panel connector choice and order connectors. start production – probe/sensor/cable assembly.

• HM / TSS sensors should be installed in the SM “electronics” assembly stage – we still have some time to define the final probe constructions, and sensor locations (also sensor types).
