► Working with your group, solve the following word
problem. Remember, we LOVE word problems! J

► In 1998, people in the United States used
80,060,000,000,000,000 Btus of fossil fuels. In 1960, they
used 42,140,000,000,000,000 Btus of fossil fuels. What
was the difference in Btu usage from 1960 to 1998?
How are numbers expressed in scientific notation?

► Scientific notation is a short-hand way to express
numbers that are very large or very small.
► Scientific notation is written as the product of two factors.
The first factor must be greater to or equal to 1. The
second factor must be a power of 10.

► Multiplying by a positive power of 10 moves the decimal
point to the right.
► Multiplying by a negative power of 10 moves the decimal
point to the left.
To express numbers in standard form:

A number is considered to be written in standard form
when there are no exponents.

► Write 5.43 * 10^4 in standard form.

► Write 3.27 * 10^-3 in standard form.

► Write each number in standard form.
► A. 7.42 * 10^5 B. 6.1 * 10^-2 C. 3.714 * 10^2
To Write Numbers in Scientific Notation

► Step 1 – Place the decimal point after the first nonzero
number.
► Step 2 – Find the power of 10. Count the moves of the
decimal point. The number of moves is the exponent.
► Note – If the given number is less than 1, the exponent is
negative. If the given number is greater than or equal to
one the exponent is positive.

► Write each number in scientific notation.
► D. 3,725,000 E. 0.000316

Write each number in scientific notation.

F. 14,140,000 G. 0.00876

H. O.114 I. 931,500,000
To Compare Numbers in Scientific Notation
► Step 1 – Order the numbers according to their exponents.
► Step 2 – Order the numbers with the same exponents by
comparing the first factor.
► The number of visitors from various countries to the U.S. in
2001 are listed below. Order the countries according to the
number of visitors from greatest to least.
§ Country Number of Visitors
§ France 1.1 * 10^6
§ Germany 1.8 * 10^6
§ Japan 5.1 * 10^6
§ Mexico 1.03 * 10^7
§ United Kingdom 4.7 * 10^6
► The following is a list of the average radius at the equator for
each of the planets in our solar system. Order the planets
according to radius in order from greatest to least.
► Earth 6.38 * 10^3
► Jupiter 7.14 * 10^4
► Mars 3.40 * 10^3
► Mercury 2.44 * 10^3
► Neptune 2.43 * 10^4
► Pluto 1.5 * 10^3
► Saturn 6.0 * 10^4
► Uranus 2.54 * 10^4
► Venus 6.05 * 10^3
Summarizer

► Suppose your friend was absent the day we learned to
express numbers in scientific notation. Write a letter to
your friend explaining how to write the following numbers
in scientific notation.

► 7.113 * 10^7
