Pesticide Residues in Fresh Fruit, 2012

Summary of Residue Findings in Conventionally Cultivated Products


In 2012 a total of 799 samples of fresh fruit from conventional cultivation
were analyzed at CVUA Stuttgart for the presence of residues from over
600 pesticides. Fully 737 (92 %) of the samples were found to contain
residues from a total of 197 different substances (in 2011, 184 substanc-
es; in 2010, 169; and in 2009, 183). In all, there were 3,994 cases of
quantitatively identified residues. Exceedances of the MRL were con-
firmed in 36 (4.5 %) fruit samples (see Tables 1 and 2). In comparison to
the two previous years, the quota of violations was thereby slightly higher
(in 2011, 3.6 %; in 2010, 4.2 %; in 2009, 7.7 %).
While the samples from Germany and other EU countries had fewer cases
of MRL exceedance (7 of 226 (3.1%) and 3 of 253 (1.2%) respectively),
the samples from outside the EU, the so-called third-countries, showed a
higher rate of contamination: 25 of 302 (9.2%) samples contained levels
over the MRL.
In 2012 phosphorous acid was newly added, among others, to the spec-
trum of investigated substances. It is a fungicide and is often applied in
vineyards to combat peronospora. Quantities of from 0.36 to 11.8 mg/kg
have been detected in table grapes. Further findings of phosphorous acid
have been made in citrus fruits (0.11 to 8.2 mg/kg). Due to the compara-
tively high average quantity of phosphorous acid residues detected
(3.65 mg/kg), an increase in the average quantity of all pesticides was
reported for the year 2012 (see Table 1).

Many fruit samples were found to contain residues from multiple pesti-
cides: in 2012 as many as 663 (83 %) cases (in 2011, 81 %; in 2010,
77 %; in 2009, 82 %; in 2008, 76 %). An average of 5.0 different sub-
stances per fruit sample were detected, whereby the distribution of the
number of pesticides differed by type of fruit and country of origin. Tables
2 to 7 present the results of the residue tests differentiated by type of fruit.
The frequency of the substances found in fresh fruit is presented in Table
8.
