2-2, 2-3, 2-4 Adding/Subtracting/Multiplying/Dividing
                      Rational Numbers

Adding Rationals:
If the signs are the same, keep the sign and add
     their absolute values.
If the signs are different, keep the sign of the
larger value and subtract their absolute values.
Example 1: Find the sum of 8 and (-5).
            8+(-5) = + (8-5) =3
Example 2: Find the sum of –1 and (-4).
           -1 + (-4) = - (1 + 4) = -5
                                                    Unit1
2-2, 2-3, 2-4 Adding/Subtracting/Multiplying/Dividing
                      Rational Numbers

Subtracting Rationals: Change to adding a negative and
                       follow the addition rules.

Example 3: Find the difference of -8 and 5.
             -8 - 5 = -8 + (-5) = - (8 + 5) = -13
                                                      Unit1
2-2, 2-3, 2-4 Adding/Subtracting/Multiplying/Dividing
                      Rational Numbers

Multiplying and Dividing Rationals:
If the signs are the same, the result is
             positive.
                (+)(+) = (+)
                (-)(-) = (+)
If the signs are different, the result is
             negative.
                (+)(-) = (-)
                (-)(+) = (-)
                                                      Unit1
2-2, 2-3, 2-4 Adding/Subtracting/Multiplying/Dividing
                      Rational Numbers

Additive Inverse Property: The sum of a number and its
                           opposite is 0.
                   a + (-a) = 0

Multiplicative Property of –1: The product of any
                               number and –1 is its
                               additive inverse.
                    (-1)a = -a
