               NEW Trainings! Recognition Ceremonies! Events!

In This Issue         Dear Friends,

   Cookie Sales       This newsletter is mailed to all registered Leaders in the Orinda-Moraga
                      Girl Scout Service Unit. To share with other Girl Scout volunteers, click

Spring Registration   As we approach the end of the school year, in addition to Spring
                      Registration and finalizing Troop Annual Finance reports (due no later

                      1) Leader-Daughter Tea. Although we take on the role of troop leader

                      2) Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Graduating Scout Ceremony. NEW this
                      year we are including our scouts who have earned the Bronze Award in
                      this recognition ceremony. All troops are invited to attend to celebrate
                      the achievements of our local Girl Scouts. Sunday, May 19th. See below
                      for details.

                      3) Brownie AND Junior Camporee. Cadette Troop #30072 has been
                      working all year to make this a weekend to remember. Your troop will
                      not want to miss out on this one!

                      4) NEW Trainings! We have a WONDERFUL opportunity to take part in
                      a newly designed JOURNEY'S Essential training. Details below - but
                      this will be a unique and VERY helpful evening. And, there is a special
                      BRONZE, SILVER, GOLD Award training happening on May 4th, at
                      the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Alameda. You have questions, they
have answers!

5) Service Unit Team Jobs. After the last Leader meeting we re-wrote
many job descriptions and have them posted on the website for review.
You do not have to be a Leader to take on any of these positions. Please
review the list below and see if any of your parent volunteers (moms or
dads) would be a match.

Finally, please mark your calendars for our year-end Leader meeting on
Tuesday, May 14th. This is our Volunteer Recognition meeting and

Cookie Sales 2013!
A Note From Cookie Chair, Kelly Perrin

Just wanted to wrap this year of cookie sales up! Thank you for all your
patience while a bunch of newbies figured out what they were doing. As
a service unit, we did pretty awesome. Our overall sales were up almost
12% over last year with 49 troops selling. Gift of Caring sales were up
10%. Yippee! Incentives should be arriving in May, I will let you know
when they are ready for distribution.

I plan to take on this job again next year, so if you have any feedback of
what you liked or didn't like about the way cookie sales went this year,
please let me know. Was there enough communication from me, or too
much? If you attended training, would you like to see it done differently
or with more information? Basically, anything good or bad you want to
say, I want to hear it! Thanks. Kelly.

Special thank to Ashley Coates, Merrylee Landau, Michelle Goldsmith, and
Natalie Doane, for all their hard work in making cookie sales a success.

Service Unit Events!

ATTENTION Older Troops: Hosting a Service Unit Event is a wonderful
way to develop leadership skills, share what you have learned on your
most recent Journey, or to fulfill the Take Action Project part of your
Journey. It is time to "pay it forward" for the events that you enjoyed as
a younger scout.

*Leader Daughter Tea: Don't Forget to RSVP!

Save the date! Troop 30378 is hosting our annual Leader/Daughter Tea
on Sunday afternoon, May 5th. We look forward to thanking our Leaders
for their efforts and time and their daughters for their understanding and
patience supporting our amazing Orinda/Moraga Service Unit creating a
worthwhile and unique girl experience. Light refreshments will be served

Sunday, May 19th, 3:00. Join us in honoring our scouts who have
earned the highest honors in Girl Scouts and recognize girls who have
stayed in scouts all through high school. If you have scouts who would

*Brownie AND JUNIOR Camporee:

Sat., May 25,2013, 3:00 PM - 10:30 AM, Sun., May 26th.

Cadette Troop #30072 is hosting a Camporee at Twin Canyons, Lafayette
with the theme of "Adventureland" on Sat., May 25,2013, 3:00 PM -
10:30 AM, Sun., May 26th. (Memorial Day weekend). All Brownies and
Juniors are welcome to attend. This fun overnight event will include:
Dinner, activities, talent show, breakfast, T-shirts and more! Please RSVP

*Daisy & Brownie Playday

We are looking for troops to coordinate the Daisy / Brownie Playday (best
for a Cadette, Senior or Ambassador troop(s) NEXT Fall. Please
encourage your troop to undertake the planning of this wonderful event.
This event may be done as co-op project with several other troops if that
is easier to manage.

If you have a new event you would like to host for the service unit,
please contact either Christianne Bua-Giles or Mary Friese.

Spring Registration and Financial Reports

Early Registration deadline is June 28. You can earn patches and the
troop can earn a clipboard, and there are new fees and deadlines for
Lifetime Registration. To get more information about these and other
topics (such as having volunteer clearance), please check out the upper
left box on our Orinda Moraga website (the document is for the SU
Registrar, but it has detailed info that provides good information).

Troop Annual Finance Reports Due May 31st!

May is around the corner, so we are sending out a friendly reminder that
it is time to begin preparing your troop's Annual Finance Report. This is a
mandatory income and expense reconciliation which all troops (even
disbanding and Daisy troops) must file each year. Two copies of this
report with corresponding bank statement are due to Association
Treasurer Margaret Rosso no later than May 31st. We are happy to
accept completed reports at the final Leader Meeting on May

You may also mail the report to Margaret Rosso, 78 Greenfield Dr.,
Moraga. Scanned and emailed copies are accepted as long as the
signatures are present. Margaret's email address is
Annual Finance forms and FAQ sheet can be found on our Service Unit
website, or the GS NorCal

If you cannot meet the May 31 deadline, PLEASE email Margaret to let
her know the expected completion date. Margaret needs to review ALL
forms before submitting them to Council by the June 30th deadline.

Troops that miss the June 30th deadline will NOT be allowed to
participate in 2013-2014 cookie or nut sales!

News From Council
NEW Online and In-Person Trainings

Bronze, Silver, Gold Award training:

A new and one time only awards program is open for registration now! If
you are interested in the Bronze, Silver, or Gold award and are looking
for more information, an in person training, and fun interactive activities
to learn about the prerequisites and process - this is for you.

Details: Saturday, May 4, 2013 10am to 3pm (This is a drop in program,
so you have the choice of being there the entire 5 hours or coming a little
later or coming early and leaving earlier. The time frame you attend is
based on what you want to get out of the program and your own
schedule. Trainings will be going on all day in 2 hour blocks.)
Cost: $15 per person
Location: Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, CA.
Parking: Not included, but available at the fairgrounds at fairground

Girls will walk away with a journey book, a map to the Gold Award,
knowledge of how to do the awards, and potential prizes.

New Journeys Training in Walnut Creek
Are you struggling with how to implement Journey's into your Girl Scout
year? Are you having trouble with Journey's and think it is too long or
boring? Looking for new ideas or ways to use the Journey's in a different
way? Look no further because we are hosting a special presentation on
the National Program Portfolio to cover all of these concerns just for you!
During this presentation, we will cover how to use a Journey so it is fun,
does not take all year and then we will tie it all together with the Girls
Guide to Girl Scouting! Bring your tough questions for some great
answers! Melanie Vasilevsky, Program Director, overseeing the National
Program Portfolio will present this special training. We hope you will be
able to attend.

New Courses Live on GSNorCal Website:

Outings, Short Trips and Overnights: This course is required for at least
one adult who will attend any outing, short trip or overnight (any activity
where you will meet at a different location than regular troop meetings)
and who is involved in the planning process with the girls. You should
take Safety-Wise before taking this course.

Working With Girl Scout Juniors: This course is not required, but it is
highly recommended for at least one adult in attendance at every Junior
troop meeting/outing

Service Unit Recognitions Tutorial:This course will walk you through the
new packet for the Spring 2013 Service Unit level recognitions.

New Required Safety Course for Adults at Troop Meetings/Outings:
A new online learning course "Safety-Wise" is now available on our
website. This course is REQUIRED of at least one adult in attendance at
every troop meeting/outing. Click here to complete this course. This
new interactive course replaces the former "Staying Safe" course. Brush
up on your safety knowledge so that you will "be prepared" to keep girls
safe during all your Girl Scout activities.

Diablo Day Camp
Camp Opening at Twin Canyons in Lafayette is June 8th from 11 am-3

Please help get camp ready for our 10 summer sessions. Drop in for an
hour or so to help prepare the site.

Families welcome. Bring gloves and water. Snacks available.

Community Events:

Orinda Action Day:
Saturday, April 20 - 9 to Noon

It's time for action in Orinda! This is a great troop activity! Lend a hand
to help beautify the town of Orinda. There are many kid-friendly projects
available. Check-in at Orinda Library Plaza at 9:00 to get your project.
Enjoy some bagels, fruit, juice and coffee before you get started. At
11:30, there will be a pizza lunch. Participants will earn a free "Orinda
Action Day" T-shirt.

Orinda Intermediate School's Bulldog Theater:

Once On This Island, Jr. at OIS Wednesday, April 24 through Saturday,
April 27. Enjoy special pricing of $1/student, $6/adult for the Wednesday,
4/24 and Thursday, 4/25 preview shows - 4:30 p.m. on each day. This is
a great opportunity to plan a fun and easy field trip with your troop -- all
ages are welcome and your troop will be recognized at the start of the
show! Pricing for the Friday, 4/26 and Saturday, 4/27 shows are
$8/standard, $10/premium.

Join the Team!
Open Service Unit Team Positions

We are currently looking for new volunteers to join our Service Unit
Team. The team meets 5 times a year and helps plan and direct the
activities within our area. Time commitments vary by job and are
outlined with each description. You do not need to be a leader to be on
the SU Team. perhaps there is a parent in your troop who would be a fit

Leader Meetings

Please join us for fun and informative Leader meetings held just five
times per year. Mark your calendar:
     Tues. May 14 - Recognition Ceremony
All meetings are held at Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church on Moraga Way
in Orinda at 7:30 PM. See you there!

Family Partnership Helps Us All

Girl Scouts of Northern California provides us with training, CHOICES activities, day
camps, sleep-away camps, scholarhsips, and outreach programs. Fall Product and Nut
sales can only cover so much.

The rest of the funding comes from grants and ALL OF US through our Family
Partnership Donations. Donations may be made online through the secure online
donation service. Please consider making a donation today, no amount is too small.
