    1. Set user name(Control Panel-> User Accounts)

    2. Install Anti Virus:

            a. Go to one space and log in:
            b. Click on ‘IT-Services’ on top
            c. Click on ‘IT Security’
            d. Click on ‘Anti Virus Software ‘on the left
            e. If computer is on campus:
                              >   Click on Windows Windows VirusScan and install McAffee
            f.   otherwise:
                              >   Install Microsoft Security Essentials

    3. Install and open ‘TweakUI’ :
            a. Open logon
            b.    Set ‘Autologon’
       Or for Windows 7, go to:
           a. Start-> type in ‘netplwiz’

    4. Set time sync to check every day
            a. Edit registry:
            a. Start menu->run: regedit
            b. In regedit:
            c. System Key
            d. Click on Value Name: SpecialPollInterval , Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
            e. Data: Seconds in Decimal Given the problems we have with the clocks on the
               computers - change the decimal value to 86400 seconds (ie. Every day)
    5. De-activate Daylight savings:
            a. Double click Windows clock
            b. Time Zone tab
            c. Uncheck box for daylight savings

    6. Turn off Power Saving

           a. Control Panel →Power Options
           b. Turn all power saving options to never

    7. Install software e.g. Loggernet:

           a. Connect the laptop to an internet port within the geography department
           b.   Map the reference drive (ask Simone or Sue for the IP address and login)
           c. The installation software can be found on the reference drive under
              references/software and licenses/ Campbell Scientific/Loggernet 4.0. Run the setup
              file. The activation code is in a text file called 'Serial number' in the same directory.

    8. Install software and instruments. A detailed instruction for the relevant software can be
       found at the end of this document. At the moment this documents contains instructions for
           a. loggernet
    9. Schedule automatic start of software at computer start using Scheduled Task Manager:

           a. Start→Programs→Accessories→System tools→Scheduled Tasks
           b. Add Scheduled Task- Starts Task Wizard
           c. If program is in Dialogue Box:
                            >   Select it and press next
           d. If not:
                            >   Click ‘Browse’ to find and select it

    10. Share drive where data is stored
           a. Look in left hand tab in windows explorer
           b. Click share folder (read and write permission)
    11. Enable remote connection:
           a. If computer is on campus:
                            >   Enable Remote Desktop
           b. If computer is off campus
                            >   Install logmein
           c. Ensure that the computer can be seen elsewhere in the system and can be
                accessed remotely

Connect the data logger to the computer using a prolific usb to serial port connector

    1. Check which port you've connected it to by looking under
                             >   control panel → system →hardware → device manager and clicking
                                 the 'ports' tab.

    2. This should tell you that something is plugged into COM#, where # is a number.
                             >   If it does not, or shows an error, install drivers for the prolific usb to
                                 serial cable.
    3. Open Loggernet from the programs menu
    4. Select 'setup' and check it is on standard, not EZ view (button on the top left hand corner).
       If a setup window with a picture of dataloggers pops up, click cancel.
    5. Click 'add root' on the top left hand corner and select comport, then the type of datalogger
       you are connecting. The left hand menu should then show a nested list of the connection
       and the logger.
    6. Click 'comport' and select the correct COM port. Click 'apply'.
    7.   Go back to the main loggernet toolbar and select 'connect screen'.
                             >   The logger should appear in the left hand menu. Select it and click
                             >    If you have difficulty connecting, check the logger is powered,
                                 turned on, and that you have the correct COM port selected.
                             >   If it connects, you should now have the table definitions.
    8. Now go back to the setup menu, select the datalogger and the tab 'data files'.
    9. Change the directory to which the data logs to C: /datalogger_name/ datalogger_name.dat

                             >   Change the output format to array compatible csv.

                             >   Click the three dots next to the output format.

                             >   Deselect array ID. Whether seconds need to be recorded will
                                 depend on the resolution of the output data.
    10. Click the ‘Schedule’ tab and enable scheduled collection.
                             >   Set the time interval of primary collection to one minute. Click
    11.Check that files are written in the correct place- the first collection will occur after a minute-
       refresh the datalogging directory to check this happens.

                            Installing LAS EVATION Software

  1. Install EVATION from install file- external hard drive:
                a. May have issue with laptop requesting “z:move/home/” directory
                b. If so, use USB flash drive and change drive volume ‘letter’ and ‘path’
                c. Go to Start→Computer→Manage→Disk Management→ Change paths...
                d. Change it to ‘z’ and create the move/home directory
                e. Restart computer to complete installation (leave the USB drive in)
  2. Set working directory folder for EVATION to install predefined folder structure
  3. File→ ‘working directory’
  4. Select ‘YES’ if new folder is needed
  5. Select configuration→instrument
  6. Select the type of instrument; for the LASMKII you select LAS II
  7. Go to the ‘communication’ tab:
                a. Choose the COM port
                b. Select Baud rate: 9800
                c. The manual recommends ‘parity’ and ‘data bits’ are left default
  8. Go to the ‘Installation’ tab:
                a. Effective height should be 45m
                b. Path length: 1380m
                c. Other setting should be correct as default
  9. Configure→ Device Parameters tab:
                a. Wake up and sleep time- ALWAYS on (no sleep)
                b. Set operating temperature
                c. Logging interval: 60s
                d. Real-time interval: 60s
  10. Should be able to compare EVATION and LASMKII configurations
                a. Green light means discrepancy between configuration of EVATION and LASMKII
  11. Configuration→ Data Processing
                a. Set latitude of instruments
                b. Set effective height (45m)
  12. From EVATION main menu, select ‘ Real-time data’ tab
                a. Diagnostic flags on left hand side light up if warning from scintillometer
                b. In top right hand side of window if instrument improperly connected or
                            >    ‘Awaiting instrument identification’ will display
  13. Data collection settings – internal logger
                a. Time settings for data recording and collection should be in UTC (Greenwich
                   Mean Time)
                b. Automatic start- records data as soon as it is available
                c. ‘Logger Date’ and ‘Time’ need setting for current date and time (UTC)

               d. All data downloaded is put in the ‘INPUT’ folder EVATION creates in the
                  working directory

                   Setting Up Loggernet

  1. Add logger through “setup” client:
          a. Choose logger type from list of loggers
          b. Choose Packbus code if logger setup prompts you for it and security code if
             one is set for the relevant logger
          c. Try to connect to the logger – will work if security code correct, packbus
             number correct and all wires are in place in correct com port
          d. Select the “base date” and synchronise the logger clock with the computer
             clock, ensuring they are both at GMT
          e. Send correct logger program (most up to date version)
        f. Select output directory and folder format
  2. Enter “Connect” client through loggernet:
          a. Select logger and connect to it
          b. Click on “NumDisplay” on toolbar across the top of Connect screen
          c. Add variables to the Display and check that the logger is getting realtime data
             at the correct frequency
          d. Check the data output file is increasing in size (should be able to find directory
             of file from Loggernet “Setup” client screen.

                   Setting Up Comcap

  1. Connect the instrument and go to Control Panel-> System->“Device Manager”
  2. Check Comport of input instrument
  3. In ComCap :
         a. Go to “instrument setup”
         b. Choose correct Comport for the instrument
          c. Select correct baud rate
          d. Set directory for files to be saved to
          e. Choose appropriate file format and frequency of file refreshing- i.e. should
             files be in hourly/daily files
          f. Select TimeStamp

  4. Click File->Start Capturing and check that data is echoed back on the screen
  5. Check directory for file format and that file is increasing in size while capture occurs
