Barlow Name Changes
There have been a number of name changes within the various Barlow families over the years. Some of these changes were the result of adoptions, some were the result of the anglicization of non-English surnames, and some seem to be based on pure whimsy, although at the time there probably were perfectly valid reasons to make the change. One of the most interesting examples of a name change due to adoption occurred when the descendant of one Barlow line was adopted by a descendant of another Barlow line. Matilda Barlow was a daughter of William and Abigail Barlow, and a granddaughter of Jonathan and Plain (Rogers) Barlow, who came to Delaware County, New York, from New Brunswick, Canada, shortly after the Revolutionary War. Matilda married Robert Leal of Delaware County and they had two sons, William Leal, born about 1838, and Charles Leal, born about 1840. Matilda (Barlow) Leal died on

September 16, 1840, and the infant Charles Leal was adopted by Charles and Eunice Barlow and his name was changed to Charles Barlow. It is not known what happened to the father Robert Leal and his oldest son William. Charles and Eunice Barlow were not closely related to either Matilda Leal or her husband. Charles Barlow was born in 1798 in Fairfield County, Connecticut, and was a son of Samuel and Ann (Hawley) Barlow. He was a carpenter at Andes, Delaware County, New York, and lived there until around 1850 when he moved to Horseheads, Chemung County, New York. Young Charles Leal/Barlow grew up in Horseheads, was listed as an apprentice carriage maker in the 1860 census and died unmarried in 1867.

Barlow Name Changes (continued)
Another interesting name change involved John Levi Barlow, who was born on April 12, 1842, probably at Norfolk, Litchfield County, Connecticut, and was a son of Levi and Eliza P. (Waite) Barlow. After his father died in 1845, John Barlow was adopted by Edward E. Ryan of Norfolk. According to the History of Norfolk by Joseph Eldridge, John Barlow was renamed Edward John Ryan. However, he was recorded as Edward Barlow living at Norfolk in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. He served in the Civil War as John Barlow. He enlisted on April 25, 1861, at Meriden, Connecticut, for 3 months. He was a Private in Company B of the 3rd Connecticut Infantry Regiment and was mustered out on August 12, 1861. He re-enlisted in August 1862 at Milan, Dutchess County, New York, as a Sergeant in Company C of the 128th New York Infantry. He was demoted to Private and transferred to Company E of the 1st Louisiana Cavalry Regiment which was organized in August 1862 at New Orleans. He was detailed as an Orderly to Colonel Henry W. Birge. From Barlow & Allied Families: "John Levi Barlow died during the Civil War, and in the family Bible is the following: 'Drowned at Carrolton, Louisiana, while watering his horse in the Mississippi River. He was Adjutant for Colonel Henry Birge at the time of his death, but he had served in the Third Regiment of the Connecticut Volunteers during a three months campaign. Enlisted again in August, 1862, in the 128th Regiment New York Volunteers. From that regiment he enlisted in the 1st Louisiana Union Cavalry, from which he was detailed as Orderly, the position he occupied at the time of his death. General Birge wrote of

him: 'I was much interested in him, as he was correct in his habits and prompt and reliable in the discharge of his duties.'" Efforts to recover his body were not successful. Yet another interesting name change occurred in Lowndes County, Alabama, and the story comes from the book Collirene, The Queen Hill by June Middleton Albaugh and Rosa Lyon Traylor, which is about the town of Collirene. It tells the story of Hugh Samuel Paisley, a dentist, who began life as a Barlow – his mother was a Paisley and his father was a Barlow – but because there were no more male Paisleys to carry on the line, his name was legally changed to Paisley. His first wife died very shortly after their marriage, so in 1856 he married again. But they had no children, so again it would seem that the Paisley name would die out. However, at the time of the Civil War there was in Mississippi a Mr. Barlow who had a large family. Mr. Barlow was an itinerant teacher and was having a hard time supporting his family. To make matters worse, he died suddenly while traveling away from home. To be of help, Hugh Samuel and his wife Molly decided to go and choose one of the boys to adopt. On arriving in Mississippi, they found that Mrs. Barlow had recently died in childbirth and left a new baby boy, John Barlow. The older Barlow children, having heard tales about marauding Yankee soldiers, were afraid that their baby brother would be stolen. So they notched both the baby's ears so that he could be identified later if necessary. (continued on next page)

Barlow Name Changes (continued)
As an older sister wanted the little boy for whom Hugh Samuel and Molly had made the trip, the new baby with the notched ears was the one they took home, adopted and named John Barlow Paisley. Other adoption name changes are recorded in the book List of Persons Whose Names Have Been Changed in Massachusetts, 1780-1892, published at Boston in 1893. These include Margaret C. Barlow to Margaret C. Donnelley on February 4, 1887, at Fall River, Bristol County; Arthur Nye McClintock to John Edwin Barlow on September 3, 1889, at Hardwick, Worcester County; Matthew Nunney to Matthew Nunney Barlow on February 12, 1867, at Buckland, Franklin County; and William O'Donnell to William Barlow on September 10, 1872, at Milford, Worcester County. One of the most significant examples of the anglicization of a foreign name to Barlow was the family descended from Christopher and Pavera Parlur of the Germanna Colony of Virginia. According to Barlow Family 1717-1984 by Jewell Colliver, Christopher and Pavera Parlur came to America with about twenty other German Protestant families and settled in Virginia. Christopher was born about 1695 and died about 1747. "When the Colonists arrived in London from Germany, their ship's Captain was arrested and detained in jail for several weeks. During this time, their supplies were exhausted and many of them died of hunger on the voyage to America. Contrary to their expectations they landed in Virginia and were sold as indentured servants to Governor Alexander Spotswood by the ship's Captain to pay for their transportation. In Virginia these twenty families comprising about eighty
Barlow of Barlow 573

persons joined the Germanna Colony in Essex County (later Orange County) and engaged largely in iron manufacturing. The name Germanna was first used by Governor Spotswood for the skilled iron workers and Good Queen Anne: Germ + Anna. Governor Spotswood had a grandson, Alexander Elliott Spotswood, who later lived in Glasgow, Kentucky. "The iron project, with the Germans furnishing the power was not successful. The seat of government was removed to Fredericksburg in 1732, the town dwindled and soon Germanna became but a name. Germanna was the first German settlement in Virginia, was the first town of Spotsylvania County, was where St. George's Parish was organized, was where the first iron furnace in America was built and was where the first pig iron was made." Christopher Parlur and his wife had four sons, all born in Virginia: Matthias, Jacob, Christopher and Adam. Matthias, who had no children, apparently used both Bellar and Barlow as a surname. Jacob seems to have generally used Barler as a surname, and Christopher and Adam used Barlow. In the third generation, all of Christopher's descendants were using the Barlow surname. Another example of an anglicization name change was Andrew Barlow of Bishop Hill, Henry County, Illinois [see Barlow of Barlow, August 2003]. Anders Berglöf was born on February 19, 1830, in Ettingbo, Östervåla Parish, Sweden, and was a son of Anders Berglöf and Anna Larsdotter. He received a passport on July 25, 1850, at (continued on next page)

Västerås and came to America on the ship Condor from Gävle, Sweden, arriving November 9, 1850. He settled at Bishop Hill, Henry County, Illinois, where he called himself Andrew Barlow. In 1855-6 he moved to Kewanee, Illinois, where he worked as a tailor and saddler. After brief stays in Nebraska and Iowa, he returned to Bishop Hill where he initially farmed but in 1870 turned to merchandising. Andrew Barlow married Elizabeth Janson on September 21, 1851, in Henry County. She was born in 1832 in Sweden. They were recorded at Plattville Township, Mills County, Iowa, in the 1860 census. One of the strangest cases of a change of name to Barlow involved a Canadian named James (or Joseph) LaJelle. James LaJelle was born around 1795 in Ontario, Canada. Around 1820 he changed his name to James Barlow and came to the United States where he settled initially in Ohio. He married Elizabeth Cosseboone, who was born in 1796 in New Jersey. Their children were: Mittie Barlow, born in Ohio, married Edward Ranney, died in 1849 at St. Louis, Missouri; Elizabeth Barlow, born in 1825 in Ohio; Angeline Barlow; born in October 1827 in Ohio; Joseph Barlow, born in 1830 in Ohio; James Barlow, born in 1834 in Ohio; Mary Barlow, born in 1840 in Indiana; and Thomas Barlow. Sometime in the late 1830's the family moved to Scott County, Indiana, where James Barlow died around 1841-1844. Elizabeth married second Henry Miller and they were recorded at Frankfort in Scott County in the 1850 census with Elizabeth's children Elizabeth Barlow, James Barlow and Mary A. Barlow. Elizabeth Barlow Miller died in 1880 in Scott County, Indiana.

Arabella Wharton Griffith Barlow
Although published in 2001, we have only recently received a copy of Volume 1 of The Journal of Women's Civil War History edited by Eileen Conklin. There are ten very interesting articles covering varying aspects of women's involvement in the Civil War. Five of the pieces are about individuals and the others are about more general studies of the activities of women "from the home front to the front lines." Of particular interest to us is the lead article by Don Richard Lauter about Arabella Wharton Griffith Barlow, the wife of General Francis Channing Barlow. The author traces Arabella's life from her childhood in New Jersey, through her
Barlow of Barlow 574

marriage to "Frank" Barlow, her work as a nurse in the Civil War, her personal involvement when General Barlow was so severely wounded at Antietam, and finally her death from a fever probably contracted from her work in the Union hospitals. The book is in print, ISBN 1-57747-075-3, is reasonably priced, and is available through bookstores or amazon.com.
