2009-10 Budget Act Revising the CAHSEE Requirement for Students with Disabilities Pursuant to Assembly Bill 2 of the 2009-10 Fourth Extraordinary Session (ABX4 2) (Chapter 2, Statutes of 2009), which enacted California Education Code Section 60852.3, commencing with the 2009-10 school year, an eligible pupil with a disability is not required to pass the CAHSEE as a condition of receiving a diploma of graduation or as a condition of graduation from high school. Pupils with disabilities will continue to take the CAHSEE in grade ten for purposes of fulfilling the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. This exemption shall last until the State Board of Education either implements an alternative means for students with disabilities to demonstrate achievement in the 1
standards measured by the CAHSEE or determines that an alternative means assessment to the CAHSEE is not feasible. Section 60852.3 of California Education Code can be accessed on the Official California Legislative Information Web page at http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html (Outside Source).
Division Name Change The California Department of Education (CDE) recently reorganized several branches and divisions in response to changes in funding programs and budget cuts. A result of these changes is that the division formerly known as the Standards and Assessment Division has been renamed the Statewide Assessment Division. This is a change in name only; the division did not change staff or responsibilities. During the transition period, districts may continue to receive materials or communications with the former division name. More information regarding changes in the structure of the CDE can be found in an email to district superintendents from Jack O’Connell dated June 26, 2009. The email is located on the CDE Newsroom Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/nr/el/le/yr09em0626.asp.

On September 2, 2009, the CDE is tentatively scheduled to release to the public the summary results for the 2008-09 CAHSEE administrations. Results at the school, district, county, and state levels will be posted on the CAHSEE Reporting Web page at http://cahsee.cde.ca.gov/reports.asp. At the end of August 2009, the CDE is scheduled to release the CAHSEE assistance packet Explaining 2008-09 Summary Results on the CAHSEE Resources Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/hs/resources.asp. The packet will provide assistance in navigating the CDE CAHSEE Web site in order to access summary CAHSEE results and to understand the online summary reports.
CAHSEE Training DVD Coordinators should have received the 2009-10 CAHSEE Training DVD prior to the July 2009 administration of the CAHSEE. If the DVD has not been received, contact ETS CAHSEE Support at 1-800-241-5687.
English-Language Arts Study Guides Available Printed copies of the English-language arts (ELA) CAHSEE study guides are still available. Interested coordinators can request the ELA guides by e-mailing the CAHSEE Office at firstname.lastname@example.org. The e-mail should include the number of boxes requested (each box contains 56 guides), a shipping address and contact information, and a FedEx shipping number. Boxes can only be sent to districts who supply the FedEx shipping number. Each box weighs approximately 35 pounds; districts should contact FedEx directly to estimate shipping costs. Online versions of both the ELA and mathematics study guides can be downloaded from the CDE CAHSEE Program Resources Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/hs/resources.asp.
Remaining Test Administration Training Opportunities Due to budget constraints, the last remaining CAHSEE training workshop that was originally scheduled to be held at the San Diego County Office of Education (COE) has been cancelled. Previously, on June 30, 2009, the CDE and ETS provided a similar Webcast for district and test site coordinators. A second Webcast will be held on December 2, 2009, from 9-11:30 a.m. To participate in the upcoming Webcast or to access the archived June Webcast, coordinators can log on to the San Diego COE Web site at http://wcportal.sdcoe.net/v_h.asp (Outside Source). Materials from the Webcast, including the PowerPoint presentation, can be found on the ETS CAHSEE Web page at http://www.ets.org/cahsee/. Questions about the workshop or Webcasts should be directed to ETS CAHSEE Support at 1-800-241-5687.
