UNDERSTANDING AND
DEALING WITH STRESS
WHAT IS STRESS?
Stress is your body's way of responding to any kind
of demand. It can be caused by both good and bad
experiences. When people feel stressed by
something going on around them, their bodies
react by releasing chemicals into the blood. These
chemicals give people more energy and strength,
which can be a good thing if their stress is caused
by physical danger. But this can also be a bad
thing, if their stress is in response to something
emotional and there is no outlet for this extra
energy and strength.
The mental (emotional)
symptoms of stress include:

 Tension
 Irritability
 Inabilityto concentrate
 Feeling excessively tired
 Trouble sleeping
The physical symptoms of stress
include:
 Dry mouth
 A pounding heart
 Difficulty breathing
 Stomach upset
 Headache
 Frequent urination
 Sweating palms
What are the causes of stress?
We all react differently to stressful situations.
What one person finds stressful another may
not at all. Almost anything can cause stress
and it has different triggers. For some people,
on some occasions, just thinking about
something, or several small things that
accumulate, can cause stress.
DEALING WITH STRESS.
TRY THESE EMERGENCY STRESS STOPPERS:
 Count to 10 before you speak.
 Take three to five deep breaths.
 Walk away from the stressful situation, and say you'll
    handle it later.
 Go for a walk.
 Don't be afraid to say "I'm sorry" if you make a mistake.
 Set your watch five to 10 minutes ahead to avoid the
    stress of being late.
 Break down big problems into smaller parts. For
example, answer one letter or phone call per day,
instead of dealing with everything at once.
 Smell a rose, hug a loved one or smile at your
    neighbor.
