Stress UNDERSTANDING AND DEALING WITH STRESS WHAT IS STRESS? Stress is your body's way of responding to any kind of demand. It can be caused by both good and bad experiences. When people feel stressed by something going on around them, their bodies react by releasing chemicals into the blood. These chemicals give people more energy and strength, which can be a good thing if their stress is caused by physical danger. But this can also be a bad thing, if their stress is in response to something emotional and there is no outlet for this extra energy and strength. The mental (emotional) symptoms of stress include: Tension Irritability Inabilityto concentrate Feeling excessively tired Trouble sleeping The physical symptoms of stress include: Dry mouth A pounding heart Difficulty breathing Stomach upset Headache Frequent urination Sweating palms What are the causes of stress? We all react differently to stressful situations. What one person finds stressful another may not at all. Almost anything can cause stress and it has different triggers. For some people, on some occasions, just thinking about something, or several small things that accumulate, can cause stress. DEALING WITH STRESS. TRY THESE EMERGENCY STRESS STOPPERS: Count to 10 before you speak. Take three to five deep breaths. Walk away from the stressful situation, and say you'll handle it later. Go for a walk. Don't be afraid to say "I'm sorry" if you make a mistake. Set your watch five to 10 minutes ahead to avoid the stress of being late. Break down big problems into smaller parts. For example, answer one letter or phone call per day, instead of dealing with everything at once. Smell a rose, hug a loved one or smile at your neighbor.
