Torpedoes taste success after loss

UWA Torpedoes have bounced back after last Sunday’s loss to wear down UNSW Killer
Whales 11-9. UWA skipper Kami Craig grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck in the
last quarter to finish with six goals as the game's most potent force.

Craig came out firing and put the Torpedoes on the scoreboard within the opening
minute. Gemma Hadley and Cathryn Earl followed suit giving the Torpedoes the lead of
3-1 in the opening term.

The Killer Whales tried to respond but were unable to break through the Torpedoes
defence. A cheeky dropping shot from Earl got the home crowd cheering.

However, momentum started to shift as the home side was unable to convert and the
Whales were able to capitalize on the Torpedoes mistakes. Taylor Leonard's top right
shot left the Torpedoes blindsided and with a narrow lead of 5-4 at the main break.

The Torpedoes went to full press looking for counters in the third period and twice hit
the post or crossbar.

Killer Whale Pinky Rewi-Henry had a sensational third term scoring three goals and
putting the Whales in the lead for the first time, leaving the Torpedoes trailing at the
third break 8-7.

The final term belonged to the home side. Jemma Dessauvagie slammed one home to
bring the scores level. Craig demonstrated all her prowess in first, regaining the lead
and then finishing it off with the last three scores.

It was a sweet victory for Torpedo Katie Smith who played her 100th NWPL game. She
was satisfied with the result, if not the manner in which it was achieved.

“This season has been really good; we haven’t had that many wins in a while so it’s been
really enjoyable.

"I’m really happy that I’m a part of this team, we are now aiming to make a top three
finish and the finals,” Smith said.
