5.      Project Objective
        Based on the requirements of the US Army Corps of Engineers, we have
        identified three major objectives. These three objectives are:
        Objective 1: Explore how various decision support system tools can be used
        to analyze dredging data to improve the planning and scheduling of dredging
        maintenance projects and to optimize dredging project costs.
        Objective 2: Provide potential application areas for decision support systems
        and to test the technical feasibility of employing several different types of
        modeling techniques.
        Objective 3: Develop a program that automates this procedure by iteratively
        running the MDFATE model to produce an optimized dredge placement plan.
     6. Project Abstract
        The goal of the research project is to explore how various decision support
        system tools can be used to analyze dredging data to improve the planning
        and scheduling of dredging maintenance projects and to optimize dredging
        project costs. To focus this first year effort we propose to concentrate on
        disposal site management operations issues. An objective of the project is to
        identify potential application areas for decision support systems and to test

   the technical feasibility of employing several different types of modeling
   techniques.

   In this research investigators from the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and
   Transportation at Rutgers University will aid Corps of Engineers personnel in
   the analysis and identification of dredging problems that can be studied using
   decision support modeling techniques.

   Phase 1: Literature Search
   Phase 2: Research Approach
       Task 1- Study of dredge operations, including database analysis and
       familiarization with dredging operation issues.
       Task 2– Assessment of Decision Support Systems with focus on disposal
       site issues.
       Task 3 – Develop prototype decision support model to expand capabilities
       of the MDFATE computer model.
       Task 4- Report of modeling activities and recommendations detailing
       areas explored and modeling activities with the most potential for
       optimizing cost performance and planning.

   A report will be developed for the Corps of Engineers that details the topic
   areas we have explored.        The report will provide recommendations

   potential for assisting Corps of Engineers managers in optimizing cost
   performance and planning dredging operations. There will also be a journal
   paper that will describe the technical issues studied during the project.
13. Potential Benefits of the Project
      The research will increase the body of knowledge of how decision
        support systems can be applied to dredging problems.
      The research into a prototype system for automating the production of
        dredge placement plans can potentially reduce costs associated with the
        production of these plans.
      The research will result in the production of a journal paper that will
        describe the technical issues studied during the project.
      The project will also result in a useful Masters degree thesis
      Final Report and Recommendations.
