PS-7.4 Use the formulas v = f λ and v = d/t to solve problems related to the velocity of waves.

Equations:
v=fλ v velocity m/s f frequency Hz λ wavelength m

f=v/λ

λ=v/f

Equations:
v = d/t v velocity m/s d displacement m t time s

d = v*t

t=d/v

Practice:
• Calculate the speed of a wave in
meters/second if the wave has a wavelength of 3.0 meters and a frequency of 250 Hz.

v=fλ v = 250 Hz * 3.0 m v = 750 m/s

Practice:
• A tidal wave, or tsunami, travels at a
speed of 253 km/h. If the distance between wave crests is 59 km, what is the frequency of the waves?

f=v/λ f = 253 km/hr 59 km f = 4.29 Hz

Practice:
• Suppose a wave has a velocity of 125
m/s and a frequency of 25 hertz. What is its wavelength?

λ=v/f λ = 125 m/s 25 Hz λ=5m

Practice:
• The frequency of a wave pattern is 88
Hz and its wavelength is 6.5 meters. Calculate its speed in meters/second.

v=fλ v = 88 Hz * 6.5 m v = 572 m/s

Practice:
• The frequency of a wave pattern is 110
hertz and its wavelength is 8.25 meters. Calculate its velocity in meters/second.

v=fλ v = 110 Hz * 8.25 m v = 907.5 m/s

Practice:
• Suppose the velocity of a wave is 88
meters/second and its wavelength is 12 meters, what is its frequency?

f=v/λ f = 88 m/s 12 m f = 7.33 Hz
