Secret recipe
The history of Krispy Kreme and its founder, Vernon Rudolph, dates back to 1937 when Vernon bought a secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe and the Krispy Kreme brand from a French chef. On July 13, in the same year, the first Krispy Kreme doughnuts were made and sold at Vernon’s new shop in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. To this day the secret recipe is kept safe in a vault in Winston Salem.
All Krispy Kreme doughnuts are cooked fresh daily at our many factories. When we’re making our Original Glazed Doughnuts, we switch on the “Hot Now” light, so that you can always tell when we’re serving our Original Glazed fresh and hot off the line. Krispy Kreme doughnuts are formed from a unique process whereby dough is extruded by air pressure to form a perfect doughnut shape. Therefore the infamous doughnut “hole” actually doesn’t exist at Krispy Kreme!

Fun Facts
The hole in the centre of a doughnut is credited to a young boy named Hanson Gregory, who, in 1847, suggested to his mother that she put a hole in the middle of her “fried cakes” to ensure the cake was fully cooked in the middle. In order to ensure that everyone has access to the FUNdraising program we limit the number of times any one group can use the program. All not-for-profit groups can conduct a maximum of four doughnut drives per year, whilst schools are limited to a total of two fundraisers a year. All non-profits organisations and organised charities are eligible for our program.
