Here is another way to highlight data status using traffic lighting. This technique also uses conditional formatting as its basis, bu
traffic light image is overlaid on top of conditionally formatted cells to give an immediately familiar visual effect.

3 conditionally formatted cells are used for each value being assessed. Each cell tests one of the thresholds, one for red, one f
fill colour of black. The traffic light image is overlaid on top of the 3 cells, and has 3 transparent ovals within the image which all
colour showing through will either be the conditionally formatted condition if that condition is met, or the default black colour.

For this example, the condition thresholds are held in a table, which is named 'thresholds', containing a heading row, label and
are:

  - the red condition - =cell>=INDEX(thresholds,2,2)
  - the amber condition - =AND(cell>=INDEX(thresholds,3,2),cell<INDEX(thresholds,2,2))
  - the green condition - =AND(cell>=INDEX(thresholds,4,2),cell<INDEX(thresholds,3,2))

As you can see, this technique is very effective, but there are a few constraints to bear in mind:

  - getting the image into exactly the correct position can be somewhat fiddly, it has to be exactly positioned to ensure that all o

  - the image needs to overlay 3 rows of cells in order to accommodate the 3 colours, one per row.

These constraints mean that it is not appropriate in all cases for all reporting situations, maybe the previous traffic lighting exam
