Deck The Halls Checklist
Be a holiday design guru.
You can deck the halls, the whole house and the yard, too (and the kids will cover the dog in boughs of holly). But we all know the focus is the tree. Here’s how to trim like a pro and add a few more touches of holiday cheer inside and out.
01. The Tree
Make your Christmas tree look like a miniature version of the one in Rockefeller Center.
Step 01: Gather these items: A tree skirt A Christmas tree (real or artificial) Lights Garland or tinsel Ornaments A tree topper Step 02: Turn the trimming into a party. Ask guests to bring ornaments, or invite a group of children to help decorate—anything goes. Step 03: Spread out a tree skirt. Presents will look more festive and cleanup will be a breeze. Step 04: Plump up the branches. Needles can get scrunched up during transport. Step 05: Test the lights by plugging them into an outlet. Step 06: String lights by starting at the top and spiraling them around to the bottom. A tree with just white lights is an elegant option. A nice trick: To determine the length of light string you’ll need, multiply the tree’s height (in feet) and width (in feet - at its widest) and then double it. That’s the number of feet of lighting string you’ll need. Step 07: Wrap the garland. Start in the back of the tree at the bottom and work your way up and around. Step 08: Hang the ornaments, placing large ones toward the bottom of the tree and heavy ones on the thickest branches. A good measure: Six ornaments for every six inches of height. Step 09: Add the tree topper. Step 10: Admire your work and invite others to do the same. Make sure there are no bare patches and that the ornaments look evenly spaced.

02. Tree Alternatives
