MiTeGen Announces Collaboration and License Agreements with EMBL
Ithaca, NY, May 23, 2013 --(PR.com)-- MiTeGen LLC, a provider of innovative consumables for X-ray
diffraction, crystallography and protein crystallization to academic, pharmaceutical, industrial and
government researchers around the world, announced that it has signed agreements with EMBLEM, the
commercial subsidiary of the EMBL (the European Molecular Biology Laboratory).
“As in many research fields, advances in structural biology rely on the performance of the investigation
tools, that's why the development of new instruments is an essential part of EMBL's mission,” says
Florent Cipriani, who heads the synchrotron instrumentation team at EMBL in Grenoble, France.
“Together with Josan Marquez, who is charge of the high throughput crystallization facility we developed
CrystalDirect®, a new system that enables full automation of the macromolecular X-ray crystallography
process. The partnership with MiTeGen enables us to offer high quality consumables to the scientific
Under the agreements, MiTeGen and the EMBL outstation in Grenoble will collaborate on the continued
development of thin-film crystallization plates for protein crystallization. Additionally, MiTeGen will act
as the exclusive worldwide distributor of EMBL's CrystalDirect® plates, and the non-exclusive
distributor of other EMBL products such as the SC3 basket for cryo-storage and transport of samples.
Customers can order MiTeGen In-Situ-01 plates at this time and can expect to see late stage prototypes of
the CrystalDirect® plate at ACA2013 this summer, with commercial sales of CrystalDirect® plates
following closely afterward.
“The development of thin-film plates such as MiTeGen's In-Situ-01™ plate, and EMBL's CrystalDirect®
Plate bring significant new capabilities to crystallographers,” says Robert Newman, CEO of MiTeGen.
“These include an unsurpassed ability to perform X-ray and UV studies on crystals in-situ; the ability to
harvest crystals automatically with EMBL's CrystalDirect® system; and vastly improved plate handling
capabilities. The collaboration of MiTeGen and the EMBL for the further development in this arena is a
great match for bringing unique advancements in these tools to the scientific community. We look
forward to the continued development of our partnership with EMBL.”
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory is a non-profit organization and a basic research institute
funded by public research monies from 20 member states and one associate member. Research at EMBL
is conducted by approximately 85 independent groups covering the spectrum of molecular biology.
