Better Adjectives than “Sad”
1. Crestfallen      Sad because of disappointment, especially after being hopeful or confident
                    Having lost the ping pong championship, Kim was crestfallen.
2. Wistful          Thinking sadly and deeply about something in a wishful way.
                    Wistful, the little boy looked longingly in the pet store window at the new puppies.
3. Melancholy       A gentle, long-lasting sadness
                    Sarah was melancholy about the break-up, and she didn’t feel like going to the dance.
4. Miserable        Extremely sad and depressed to the point of not responding to comfort
                    The weather was miserable; the wind was howling and the air was frigid.
5. Forlorn          Very sad because of feeling abandoned or deserted
                    The teen, orphaned as a child, could never shake his feeling of forlornness.
Better Adjectives than “Fancy”
6. Luxurious        very comfortable, of high-quality, and expensive
                    In comparison to the plain Motel 6, the Hilton Hotel was luxurious.
7. Elegant          stylish and sophisticated
                    Elegant—that’s the word that comes to mind when I think of Lexus automobiles.
8. Glamorous        dressed or made up to be good-looking, especially in a high-fashion manner
                    Dressed glamorously, the movie stars paraded down the red carpet.
9. Exquisite        very beautiful and delicate or intricate
                    The exquisite, expensive diamond bracelet had been crafted by an expert jeweler.
10. Gaudy           brightly colored or showily decorated to an unpleasant degree; too fancy
                    While the Adams’ decorations are simple and charming, the Browns’ are just gaudy.
Better Verbs than “Like”
11. Admire          regard somebody or something with approval
                    I admire that you always complete your homework, yet it’s seldom done carefully.
12. Adore           to love somebody or something intensely
                    At the back of the room, against the wall, leaned the boy she adored.
13. Appreciate      recognize and be thankful for the qualities in somebody or something
                    Honesty, hard work, and kindness—these are the qualities teachers appreciate most.
14. Cherish         to highly value something
                    Chuck cherishes his cherry chap stick more than anything.
15. Revere          to regard somebody with deep respect and amazement
                    Followers of most religions revere their god, believing he is all powerful.
Better Verbs than “Hide”
16. Conceal         to put or keep something or somebody out of sight
                    Hey! If you’re going to borrow my cell phone, conceal it or a teacher will confiscate it.
17. Camouflage      to hide something by making it match its surroundings
                    I camouflaged myself with hunters’ clothing for our game of capture-the-flag.
18. Disguise        to change the appearance of somebody or something to avoid detection
                    The bank robbers disguised themselves as teletubbies; it was all over the news.
19. Withhold        to hold something back
                    If you withhold the truth from your friends, they may begin to not trust you.
20. Stash           to put something into a secret hidden storage place
                   “Stash the acorns at my home,” suggested Sal the Squirrel, “and I’ll keep them safe.”
