Student Guidelines for ‘Hybrid’ Summer 2010 Programs
DUKE IN BRAZIL * DUKE IN RUSSIA

GENERAL Duke Global Education Office for Undergraduates (GEO-U, formerly "Office of Study
POLICIES Abroad)/DukeEngage summer ‘hybrid’ programs are only available for Duke
undergraduates who have completed their first year.
Hybrid summer program applicants must complete both the GEO-U and DukeEngage
                    online applications.
Students must attend all required information and pre-departure meetings and
                    workshops for the hybrid program.
Academic credit is only earned through completion of the study abroad portion of the
hybrid program. No credit will be given for the DukeEngage component.
Students may not apply to only the DukeEngage portion of the program; they must
apply to the full hybrid program.

FINANCES GEO-U: Students must pay the tuition for the summer program ($5,136 for a two-credit
program) plus a program fee. The program fee varies by location and is listed on the
GEO-U website (http://global.duke.edu/geo). For more information on financial aid and
scholarship for study abroad, see below as well as the GEO-U website:
                   global.duke.edu/geo/home/Resources/Finances/Financial_Aid_Scholarships.

DukeEngage: All student expenses-- with the exception of airfare and visa fees-- for the
DukeEngage component of the hybrid program are paid for by DukeEngage.
Scholarship, summer financial aid or fellowship funding is not permitted to pay for any
student expenses that occur during the DukeEngage portion of the hybrid program.

FINANCIAL AID Financial Aid is available for the study abroad portion of the program for students who
are eligible for aid during the academic year. Students are limited to receiving summer
aid for up to two summer terms, either abroad or on campus, throughout their time at
Duke. The summer financial aid form is available through the GEO-U on-line
application. Students receiving a summer financial aid award can request an advance of
summer aid to pay for pre-program expenses such as airfare by completing the 'Financial
Aid Advance Form'. Please note that financial aid funding can only be used to pay for
expenses incurred during the study abroad program that are not covered by DukeEngage.

SCHOLARSHIPS Two summer study abroad scholarships are available through the GEO-U to cover part of
the study abroad tuition and/or program fees: the Mac Anderson and Babcock.
Applications are available as part of the GEO-U on-line application. Seniors graduating
in December 2009 or May 2010, or who have already fulfilled all of their graduation
requirements at Duke prior to the start of the fall 2010 semester, are not eligible.

AIRFARE DukeEngage pays 50% of the international round-trip airfare for students enrolled
in a hybrid program. DukeEngage is contracted with Cardinal Travel Agency. Students
participating in the Brazil hybrid program are required to book tickets through
Cardinal Travel and abide by all DukeEngage flight policies and procedures.
Students participating in the Russia hybrid program are required to fly together on a
group flight organized by Five Star Touring. Prof. Edna Andrews (eda@duke.edu)
provides information about this group flight.
