Planning for 2012 London Olympics - Jumping

Letter from Equestrian Australia
18 January 2011

Dear Riders

The London Olympics will be held between 27 July to 12 August 2012 and the High Performance
Program (HPP) for Equestrian Australia - Jumping, has been working to develop a program to make
sure we have the best possible opportunity to present a competitive team at the Games. Some may
consider the spot at the Games a luxury, but there has been a well-executed plan to ensure we have
earned the right to compete for an Olympic medal in London and thankyou to all the Competitors,
Owners, support personnel, Officials and sponsors for making this position available.
In both Hong Kong and Kentucky, a team medal was within reach of the Australian team, and make
no mistake, as we head towards the London Olympics, our goal is to again have the most
competitive team possible, and to take the next step and be on the podium.
The purpose for our HPP in 2011 is to make sure that every aspiring Olympian has the best
preparation possible, wherever they are living and their circumstances, to then head into the well
proven selection process in May-June 2012, with a team to be chosen by 22 June.
Experience suggests it will be very difficult for Australian based riders to prepare for the 2012 May
and June selection events without having some competition time in Europe during 2011, or very
early in 2012.
The development program for 2011 will focus on 4 key areas:
1. Making sure there are ample opportunities to secure a MES (Minimum Eligibility Standard), also
known as a COC for riders in Australia, Europe and the USA.
2. Participation in Nations Cup events.
3. Better access to planned events in Northern Europe, and
4. High level communication with individual riders and their teams to make sure their programs are well
planned and executed with appropriate coaching and veterinary support and HPP contribution.
MES
For Australia - the HPP has been able to secure two FEI Qualifying events; at the 2011 New Zealand
Horse of the Year show in Hastings 15-20 March and again at the 2011 Australian National
Championships in Dubbo, NSW 13-16 October. In these events riders need to complete in the first
round with 8 faults or less.
Selected 2011 Australian outdoorWorld Cup events will be provided with funding to make sure the
course complies with the MES standards – there will be approximately 6 of these. Riders will need to
complete 2 first rounds with zero penalties.
The HPP is working with many Australian event organisers to make sure that as much effort as
possible is placed on the important aspects of shows including footing, equipment, course designers,
warm up areas, prize money and general facilities.
For USA based riders – there are several FEI 3* and 4* events which are available as qualifiers and,
the HPP will work with individual riders to make sure ample opportunities are available, as was done
for Harley Brown in Arizona in 2010.
European based riders will have at least 6 or seven Nations Cup events which will be eligible for
acquiring a MES as well as numerous FEI events.
Nations Cups
                      Planning for 2012 London Olympics - Jumping—cont.
Part of the development is to provide as many aspiring combinations with the opportunity to
participate in a team environment. One of the upsides of a successful 2010 campaign is that
Australia qualified a starting position at each of the FEI Promotions League events as listed:
Lummen 5* (BEL) 28 April 2011
Linz-Ebelsberg 4* (AUT) 12May
Copenhagen 4* (DEN) 19 May
Lisbon 4* (POR) 26 May
Drammen 3* (NOR) 16 June
Hamina 3* (FIN) 1 July
Gijon 5* (ESP) 31 August
and if we qualified, the Final in Barcelona 5* (ESP) 22 September.
Australia will also take part in a Teams event in New Zealand as part of the NZ Horse of the Year on
15 March 2011.

We have recently nominated a team for the CSIO4* Nations Cup inWellington, Florida USA 2 March
2011.
The HPP will be extending an Expression of Interest (EOI) to all riders to participate in these Nations
Cups – there will be some small financial support for team members as well as a Chef d’Equipe for
each competition.
Access to events in Europe
Over the past 6 years, the HPP has made considerable ground in developing better relationships
with the FEI, event organisers and officials which do allow for an improved access to many events.
The individual success of Edwina Alexander as well as the National Jumping team at Hong Kong and
Kentucky has also assisted greatly in this cause.
With some good planning and understanding of the system, we are finding that Australia can
achieve starts at many events through rider rankings, sponsor access, FEI wild cards, Organising
Committee wild cards, selected star rated events in different countries and, personal requests (more
so for the summer program).
These relationships also mean that Australia can use high quality shows for our team Selection
events and having access to high quality 3* events such as Balve and Pforzheim or 4* Riders Tour
events like Hachenburg and Paderborn all add to our ability to compete at the higher levels.
It must be noted that we are not alone in this dilemma, other countries like Japan, Brazil, Canada
also have considerable difficulty in finding spare spots at premium competitions.
Communication
A most important aspect of support from the HPP is providing high level communication with
individual riders and their teams to make sure their programs are well planned and executed with
appropriate coaching and veterinary support and HPP contribution. The Equestrian Australia office
have a very professional group of staff who work tirelessly to support riders and their entries,
provide administrative back up for the sport and importantly make sure that funds are identified
and allocated in a well-planned manner to make the most of our opportunities.
The team of the High Performance Manager, the Chef d’Equipe and the National Selectors are
available to all riders who are on National Squads and looking to develop their individual plans. The
importance of seeking out the facts rather than relying on ‘tailgate talk’ is most important when
each person is looking to make a considerable investment in their own time and resources. The
guidance and experience of the National support team can be very useful.
If you have any specific queries, please feel free to contact us.
Kind Regards,

Stephen Lamb Peter Cooke

Dear Queensland Jumping Committee,

As you are aware Equestrian Queensland has taken responsibility for the distribution of Sport Develop-
ment funding to clubs and groups wishing to run clinics etc. In order to distribute this funding equitable
we have set up an application process for which all affiliated clubs and sub-committee can apply for
funding, to help increase participation in Equestrian sport in QLD through the running of clinics/ work-
shops.

As this funding will directly affect and benefit your discipline ( jumping) we ask that you spread the word
to all jumping clubs and sub-committees.
More information and application forms can be found on the Clubs section of the EQ website.

As a "heads-up" there will be

FEI Stewards Course (May)

FEI Jumping Judge Course (May)

In the interests of safety and to encourage riders to be polite to fellow competitors and officials the National Jump-

The committee proposes that event organisers display the Code at the entrance to every warm up arena at all EA
competitions and publish the Code in all event programs to educate riders. The code will also be available on the
National website and we would really appreciate your support by publishing the final version on your State web-
sites.

tember.

Those Officials who are dual accredited (i.e. accredited as a Judge and Course Designer) must achieve the
updating points for the higher level accreditation as well as the compulsory requirements for both
accreditations.
Example: John is accredited as a Level 1 Jumping Judge and Level 2 Jumping Course Designer. John must
achieve 16 points (Level 2 requirement) and complete the three (3) compulsory requirements (Judge at 3
events, CD at 3 events and attend an updating clinic within the last 2 years). If John has completed this, he
will have 9 points and only needs to have achieved an additional 9 points from the activities listed overleaf
to renew both his Level 1 Judge and Level 2 Course Design accreditation.
Below is the listing of all activities with allocated points for re-accreditation. Points are accrued for
maintenance of current accreditation level only. Officials not accruing sufficient points in the three year
period (once off reaccreditation time frame) will be listed at a lower level.
