Philip A. Schweppenhauser & Rebecca A. Yeaton ALTAR SERVER TRAINING
Parish Offices will be closed this Wednesday, November 11 in observance of the Veteran’s Day Holiday. In case of an emergency, please call 781-545-3335 and follow the instructions. Blood Pressure Clinic will be held next weekend, November 14 & 15 in the reconciliation room of the chapel. In this Year of the Priest, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops commissioned an icon of Christ the Eternal High Priest. One of our parishioners donated a copy of this icon to the parish, which is now hanging in the vestibule of the church. It is a nice reminder to all of us to pray for priests, especially in this Year of the Priest. THE BAPTISM MINISTRY is in need of volunteers who enjoy sewing. Can you make the tiny white garments that are given to the babies on their baptismal day? The pattern is small and easy to sew. For more information, please contact Stephanie Whelan 781-545-3335 ext. 220.
Deacon Mattie Henry and Father Cannon will be conducting Altar Server Training for boys and girls in grade 3 and above on Tuesday afternoon, November 17 at 4:00 p.m. If you are scheduled to attend CCD/Religious Education at that same time, you will be credited for class by attending this training session. Serving at Mass is a wonderful opportunity to get closer to God and to grow in your faith. To pre-register, call Stephanie Whelan at 781-5453335 or email: swhelan@stmaryscituate.org. We look forward to seeing you there. R.C.I.A/Adult Faith Formation: This week’s session will meet Sunday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Center’s resource room. Our topic this week will be the Sacred Tradition. These sessions are intended primarily for those preparing to enter the church next Easter, but anyone is welcome to attend if you are interested in learning more about your faith. IMPORTANT NEWS The Scituate Police Department has notified St. Mary’s that effective this week they will start ticketing cars that are parking on Kent Street in the No Parking Zones. St. Vincent de Paul Conference will meet this Monday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center.
Pastor’s Corner November is a special time when we as the Church remember and pray for the repose of the souls of our departed loved ones. If possible, it is nice to visit their graves and offer a prayer before their mortal remains. It can be a special family moment when stories can be shared, while at the same time, teaching the children an important lesson in faith, our belief in the resurrection and in the communion of saints. These mild fall days make just such an outing possible. There was a time in the not too distant past when this was common practice. Another common practice was burying the bodies of the deceased since cremation was not possible for Catholics. Although it does not enjoy the same value as the burial of the body, the Church does permit cremation now and it is being used more often today. However, there is much confusion as to how this should be carried out. Originally the Church banned cremation because those who denied the resurrection used to cremate their remains as a sign that their mortal bodies would not be raised up as we believe in faith. The Churches in China and India, whose cultures had long used cremation, began petitioning the Sacred Congregation of Rites to end its prohibition on cremation. These countries eventually obtained permission to use cremation, which led to the lifting of its prohibition in the Universal Church. Those who choose cremation must do so with the firm belief in the resurrection of the body. ¹The Church clearly prefers and urges that the body of the deceased be present for the funeral rites, since the presence of the human body better expresses the values which the Church affirms in those rites. The Christian faithful are unequivocally confronted by the mystery of life and death when they are faced with the presence of the body of one who has died… The body of the deceased Catholic Christian is also the body once washed in Baptism, anointed with the oil of salvation, and fed with the Bread of Life… The body of the deceased brings forcefully to mind the Church’s conviction that the human body is in Christ a temple of the Holy Spirit and is destined for future glory at the resurrection of the dead. Thus it is recommended that the cremation take place after the Funeral Liturgy. There may be circumstances when it is not possible to have the body of the deceased present at the funeral. Through an indult granted by the Congregation for Divine Worship in 1997, the Church in the U.S. received permission to allow the presence of cremated remains of a body at the Funeral Liturgy. Clearly this is meant to be an exception rather than the rule. The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come. This includes the use of worthy vessels to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport, and the final disposition. The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The cremated remains are not to be scattered, nor should they be kept at one’s home for this would not be the reverent disposition that the Church requires. Whenever possible, appropriate means for recording with dignity the memory of the deceased should be adopted, such as a plaque or stone which records the name of the deceased. If you are considering cremation, following these simple guidelines will enable your family to properly mourn your loss, while treating your body with the care and reverence it deserves. The proper disposition of your mortal remains will make possible future family visits to your resting place where they can pray for you and share their stories about you. In the meantime, let us take care of ourselves physically and spiritually so we can do the visiting and praying at a cemetery for someone else.
May God bless you,
Fr. Cannon

YEAR FOR PRIESTS SPIRITUAL ADOPTION During this Year for Priests, the Vocation Office is happy to announce that Serra Boston Vocation Club is initiating the “Adopt-a-Priest Apostolate” where parishioners spiritually adopt a priest of the Archdiocese of Boston for one year. Parishioners are given the name of a priest of the Archdiocese, prayer cards and a prayer booklet and asked to pray for the particular intentions and ministry of that priest. If you are interested in more information or being assigned a priest of the Archdiocese to pray for on a daily basis, please call 978-462-1057 or go to www.serraboston.org or www.vocationsboston.org/ Resources.aspx.

Grade 10 will meet next on Sunday, November 15 from 6:15 - 7:15 p.m. Due to the Veteran’s Day holiday, there will be no classes on Wednesday, November 11 for Grades 6, 7 or 8. To all St. Mary of the Nativity Parishioners: Children’s Liturgy of the Word Needs Your Help! We would like to continue the Children’s Liturgy of the Word in the chapel at the 8:30 Sunday Mass every week, but we need more help. Please consider joining this ministry group. If you have joined us in the chapel at the 8:30 Mass in the past, then you have already seen how rewarding this ministry is to the youth of our parish. Each week those who attend listen to the Sunday readings and discuss what they have heard God say to them. Parents who have come to the chapel have told us how grateful they are that we offer this ministry at St. Mary’s, and how much they have learned about their own faith by listening to the children. This ministry does not take much of your time. If you are a student in the Confirmation Program, we will also credit you with Service Hours. We need people in the following roles and each one is very easy to do: Youth Lectors, Lead Facilitators and Assisting Facilitators. If you hear God calling you to be more involved in your parish then this could be the place for you! The Eucharist and Our Formation as the People of the Church, a lecture by Sean Cardinal O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap. The Eucharist is an invitation to live the ideas of the Gospel, to be Jesus' witnesses in the midst of our world. Formation of the heart is essential for a life of discipleship and service. In the closeness to the Lord that we experience at the celebration of the Eucharist, like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, our hearts are enlivened and we find strength for the mission. The Eucharist renews our hearts and minds, sending us forth to carry on the work of the Church. Thursday, November 10, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. in the Heights Room, Corcoran Commons, Boston College lower campus. Registration: 617-552-6501 or www.bc.edu/stmce

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Vocations grew out of the family. The family is the place where God dwells in a special way. It is a place of support and challenge, a place of love and acceptance. Within our family, we learn the right relationship with our God, with others and with ourselves. Please pray for vocations encouraged by family members. WOULD YOU PRAY FOR A PRIEST EACH DAY? The Monthly Prayer Request for Priests (MPRP) is an international apostolate which was founded in 1990 to encourage people to support Catholic priests by prayer and sacrifice. Each diocese prays for its own priests. Each day of the year bears the name of a priest from that diocese, obtained from the diocesan directory. Thus, by means of a calendar, the faithful are united in offering prayer and sacrifice for the particular “priest of the day,” always remembering to include a general intention of prayer for all priests of the diocese and around the world. The November MPRP calendar for the Archdiocese of Boston is available in the entrances of the church and chapel. Won’t you join in praying for a priest a day?
The Rosary is said every weekday morning after the 7:30 am Mass and also on Saturday after the 8:15 am Mass. On the First Saturday of every month after the 8:15 am Mass, the rosary is said in honor of Our Lady of Fatima.
