PAC Fundraising 2009/10
As parents, we all care about the same thing. Our children may choose different paths as they travel through high school. Our hope is that whatever tools and supports your child needs, they are all available when he or she needs them. It is the DSS PAC’s objective to ensure that all of our children have an opportunity to find success on their own terms. In the past, it was not necessary for the PAC to participate in fundraising activities beyond applying for our annual gaming funds. Recently, however, the financial situation at our high school has changed. We have witnessed a significant drop in revenue to the school as vending machine income has declined due to the new ‘Healthy Schools’ initiative. Soft drink machine revenue has also dropped dramatically, affecting the resources of our athletics department and there have also been significant decreases in provincial dollars for that department’s travel expenses. Added to this is the legal action made in recent years which has meant that student fees have been significantly reduced or eliminated for many programs. As a PAC, we understand these changes: we support healthy lifestyles and wish for equitable education opportunities for all. We do recognize, however, that there has been an impact at our school because of these changes. That impact will only become more significant over time. As an additional challenge, we at the PAC are quite restricted in the types of purchases on which we are allowed to spend our gaming dollars. The question we find ourselves asking is: Do we want to see an erosion in the quality of the program materials, equipment and supports our children benefit from at DSS? The PAC has decided to begin asking all DSS parents if they wish to make a one-time annual donation to the school. We stress that this donation will be entirely voluntary, and donations over $25 will be eligible for tax receipts. Current needs at the school include computers, projectors, guitars, employment support materials for students with special needs, upgraded technological supplies and software. None of these items can be purchased using our gaming dollars. These types of needs arise every year and affect many of our programs, and we want to ensure that our children are not negatively affected by our changing economic environment. Donated funds are in the control of the PAC in consultation with our school principal. After receiving requests from parents and staff, a draft budget will be drawn up, discussed and voted on at the PAC meetings. All parents have an equal vote at the PAC meetings, so this is where you have the ability to influence the priorities as much as any other parent. In order to plan and implement PAC initiatives for the coming school year, we would appreciate receiving donations by October 9th. Forms returned by October 9th will be entered into a draw for a gift certificate at Black Bond Books. Cheques should be made payable to the “Delta Secondary School”, not to the PAC. Please drop off the donation form and cheque at the school administrative office. In order to receive a tax receipt you must complete the attached form so that the school board can ensure that your donation is processed and a tax receipt is returned to you by the end of this calendar year. To protect your privacy the PAC does not receive a breakdown of what any individual or family has donated. Thanks to everyone who gives of themselves for our children and our school,
