Programme for Strategic Cooperation between Irish Aid and HigherEducation and Research Institutes (2007-2011) Water is Life: Amazzi Bulamu - GIS & Data Manager (2-year fixed term contract, with a possible extension to 3 years) Introduction: ‘Water is Life: Amazzi Bulamu’ (2007-2011) is a large multi-disciplinary project comprising a partnership of Irish Higher Education Institutions (Dundalk Institute of Technology, Dublin City University, NUI Maynooth, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin Institute of Technology Bolton St., the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, University College Dublin and Queens University Belfast), Makerere University in Uganda and various NGOs. The aim of this programme is to support sustainable water resource management as a catalyst for sustainable economic and social development. Through these high-level collaborations, the project aims to: - establish a partnership of institutions with a focus on building expertise in sustainability - centred around the core theme of water and its effects on gender, health, education and development; - build the research capacity in Irish Higher Education Institutions through doctoral and staff research in collaboration with Makerere University, Uganda; and, - allow the research conducted to inform a jointly developed taught Masters degree programme. The project is funded under the Programme for Strategic Cooperation between Irish Aid and Higher-Education and Research Institutes (2007-2011) and is led by Dundalk Institute of Technology. The lead institution, Dundalk Institute of Technology, wishes to recruit a GIS and Database Manager with the specific task of co-ordination, administering and overseeing the operational running of the programme’s extensive databases. Job Specification: Under the direction of the Project Leader and reporting to the Project Manager, a Steering Committee and an Advisory Committee, s/he will be responsible for a wide range of data collation and preparation using GIS and information technologies. S/he will have direct responsibility for the creation and co-ordination of the extensive GIS database associated with the project, in addition to some mentoring duties for the PhD researchers, whilst based in Uganda. S/he will be responsible for overseeing the collection and analysis of all of the project data and ensuring that effective central databases are developed and maintained. Much of the early work for this position will be Ugandan-based and will involve collation of existing data, e.g. health records, numbers of Aid’s orphans, working wells, etc. belonging to the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMMs) and other existing 1 Ugandan-based relevant organisations including, the Ugandan Ministry of Water, the Ugandan Water and Sanitation Network (UWASNET) and the British Geological Society (BGS) into mapping and database format that can be accessed and added to by the research teams throughout the duration of the programme. It is vital that s/he will have expertise in statistics, GIS and database management. Requirements:  A relevant good first degree, plus a masters degree or equivalent professional training in GIS.  Experience in statistical analyses of large datasets.  Practical experience in using professional GIS software, preferably ESRI products, is essential. Additional understanding of databases would be greatly beneficial.  Ability to work in multi-cultural settings.  Experience of writing reports and making presentations.  Experience of delivering projects on time.  Excellent communication skills.  An understanding of Irish Aid and their policy issues.  Ability to work under pressure and to strict timelines.  Adaptability and flexibility.
