President : Sri Ch. Chandrasekhara Rao Cell: 9848188118 Vice-President : President's Note Dear Fellow Centurians !! As the end of my tenure draws nearer, I avail this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude and overwhelming affection for the fellow patrons of the Club. My unanimous election itself is a symbol of your respect and faith in me. The trust that you reposed in me, enabled me to take the right decisions, streamline the activities at the Club and to enforce certain disciplinary measures to enhance the prestige of the Club. I am fortunate to be backed by dynamic and dedicated Members of the Committee who assisted me in all ways to formulate the developmental activities and to give a face lift to the Club. My stint as the President of the Club is a perfect example of teamspirit, co-operation and camaraderie, not only among the Committee Members but also of the Club in general. I humbly accept that NOTHING could have been achieved if not for these exceptional qualities. It is a matter of pride to me that during my term an entire new wing to Century Chambers with a complement of 11 rooms has been added. I consider this a major accomplishment which would not have been possible without the generous contributions by our eminent Members. It gives me immense satisfaction to see the modernized Shuttle Court. I hope it will give hours of fun and years of joy to all our Champion Sportsmen. I warmly thank Sri G. Subash Chandra Bose for his donation towards renovation of Shuttle Court. I acknowledge, appreciate and applaud all the donors who contributed very generously towards the various developmental activities of the Club. I also thank all the Sponsors who have unhesitatingly extended their financial co-operation to the various sporting and entertainment activities planned for the Club. Truly Sirs, all this was made possible only because of your loving co-operation and generous contributions. So allow me to say to you right from the bottom of my heart. "THANK YOU VERY MUCH". NEW LIFE The impulse to drop everything and start a whole new life is surely among the most received and rejected of all human signals for change. But I have become awfully sceptical over the years about the value of physically transplanting oneself. As I look back on the big moves that I really wish I'd done, maybe a move to Alaska would have been the making of me. More likely, it would have ended with me as food for the bears. Maybe, I missed a few great opportunities for self improvement. But if I have only regrets, it is that I haven't worked hard enough at altering my private interior geography, that I haven't been more adventurous in the travel I've made with myself. But only if we are trained to look, not to see, but to look, the opening to one's ows interior seems to be a mystic act, it has in it some flavour of the unknown, some sense of moving is to a new moment, a new pottern of the human rigmorale. It includes the highest glimpses of moral gladness, reunions, reconciliations, the bliss of long past events, even a little sadness. It changes and redistributes our "life" force, which sometimes we feel is not there We pass our life is instance never experiencing the "intensity", never understanding the "feeling" what we cannot see, we do not feel. We want everything clear and concrete. We laugh at people who want to swing on the moon! we laugh at children who want to fly! we pity the dreams of the disabled, we doubt gaiety, we doubt our own happiness. In the process we stifle our own life. Amongst us, how many people are there who do not enjoy music? Whose heart does not respond to the chuckle of a boby? whose eyes do not shine at the sight of a flowering tree? whose heart does not appreciate the colours of a masterpiece painting? whose hands do not reach to pat a child struggling with his first alphabet? How many of us believe that the whole world is rotten? How many of us do not respond to cries of distress? It is there in our mental map and in our physical terrain, to love and be loved, to learn, to grow and share. But we don't take time off to travel inwards or to explore as to what we are really about. If only we focus on this aspect of self-improvement, the world would have been a much better place to live in ..... - D. CENTURIAN QUIZ -11 GAME OF SCRAMBLED WORDS FORM 4 SIMPLE WORDS WITH THE JUMBLED LETTERS GIVEN BELOW 1) WHAT IS RECESSION ? This story is about a man who once upon a time was selling Hotdogs by the roadside. He was illiterate, so he never read newspapers. He was hard of hearing, so he never listened to the radio. His eyes were weak, so he never watched television. But enthusiastically, he sold lots of hotdogs. He was smart enough to offer some attractive schemes to increase his sales. His sales and profit went up. He ordered more a more raw material and buns and sold more. He recruited more supporting staff to serve more customers. He started offering home deliveries. Eventually he got himself a bigger and better store. As his business was growing, the son, who had recently graduated from college, joined his father. Then something strange happened. The son asked, “Dad, aren’t you aware of the great recession that is coming our way?” The father replied, “No, but tell me about it.” The son said, “The international situation is terrible. The domestic situation is even worse. We should be prepared for the coming bad times.” The man thought that since his son had been to college, read the papers, listened to the radio and watched TV. He ought to know and his advice should not be taken lightly. So the next day onwards, the father cut down the his raw material order and buns, took down colorful signboard, removed all the special schemes he was offering to the customers and was no longer as enthusiastic. He reduced his staff strength by giving layoffs. Very soon, fewer and fewer people bothered to stop at his Hotdog stand. And his sales started coming down rapidly and so did the profit. The father said to his son, “Son, you were right”. “We are in the middle of a recession and crisis. I am glad you warned me ahead of time.” Moral of the Story: It’s all in your MIND! And we actually FUEL this recession much more than we think. DGBIRE 2) HAATSG 3) YYLREA 4) BBRROE NOW ARRANGE THE CIRCLED LETTERS IN THE ABOVE WORDS TO GET THE CAPITAL OF TAMIL NADU. The boy had a collection of marbles. The girl had some sweets with her. The boy told the girl that he will give her all his marbles in exchange for her sweets. The girl agreed. The boy kept the biggest and the most beautiful marble aside and gave the rest to the girl. The girl gave him all her sweets as she had promised. That night, the girl slept peacefully. But the boy couldn’t sleep as he kept wondering if the girl had hidden some sweets from him the way he had hidden his best marble. Moral of the story: If you don’t give your hundred percent in a relationship, you’ll always keep doubting if the other person has given his/her hundred percent.. This is applicable for any relationship like love, friendship, employer-employee relationship etc., Give your hundred percent to everything you do and sleep peacefully YOUR CHILDREN ARE NOT YOUR CHILDREN THEY ARE THE SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF LIFE’S LONGING FOR ITSELF. THEY COME THROUGH YOU, BUT NOT FROM YOU, AND THOUGH THEY ARE WITH YOU, THEY BELONG NOT TO YOU. The Bathtub Test During a visit to the mental asylum, I asked the “Director how do You determine whether or not a patient should be institutionalized.” ’Well,’ said the Director, ‘we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub.’ ’Oh, I understand,’ I said. ‘A normal person would use the bucket because it’s bigger than the spoon or the teacup.’ ’No.’ said the Director, ‘A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?’ DO YOU WANT THE BED NEXT TO MINE? 4 Liquid Stages of Life YOU MAY GIVE THEM YOUR LOVE, BUT NOT YOUR THOUGHTS, FOR THEY HAVE THEIR OWN THOUGHTS. YOU MAY HOUSE THEIR BODIES, BUT NOT THEIR SOULS, FOR THEIR SOULS DWELL IN THE HOUSE OF TOMORROW, WHICH YOU CANNOT VISIT, NOT EVEN IN YOUR DREAMS. YOU MAY STRIVE TO BE LIKE THEM, BUT SEEK NOT TO MAKE THEM LIKE YOU, FOR LIFE GOES NOT BACKWARDS, NOR TARRIES WITH YESTERDAY. YOU ARE THE BOWS, FROM WHICH YOUR CHILDREN AS LIVING ARROWS SENT FORTH. THE ARCHER SEES THE MARK UPON THE PATH OF INFINITE, AND HE BENDS YOU WITH HIS MIGHT THAT HIS ARROWS MAY GO SWIFT AND FAR. LET YOUR BENDING IN THE ARCHER’S HAND BE FOR GLADNESS, FOR EVEN AS HE LOVES THE ARROWS THAT FLIES, SO HE LOVES ALSO THE BOW THAT IS STABLE. THE PROPHET - KHALIL JIBRAN. India’s Antarctic Programme Dr. Nalini Bikkina As the World Earth Day is observed on the 22nd of April and India observes National Maritime Day on the 5th of April, let us proudly take a brief look at India’s Antarctic Programme. India with a coastline of over 7500 km length, 1250 islands, continental shelf extending up to 350 nautical miles and about 2.02 sq.km area within the Exclusive Economic Zone offers immense scope for exploration and exploitation of the ocean living and non-living resources. The vastness, complexity and uncertainty of the ocean environment calls for a coordinated, centralized and highly sophisticated development response. Keeping this in view, the Department of Ocean Development (DOD) was created in 1981 to function as a nodal department for organizing, coordinating and promoting ocean development activities in the country. The Department has 5 major institutional set ups to address the Ocean related programmes viz. National Institute of Ocean Technology at Chennai, National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research at Goa, Indian National Centre for Ocean and Information Services at Hyderabad, Project Directorate, Integrated Coastal and Maine Area Management at Chennai and Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology at Kochi. Polar Regions viz. Arctic & Antarctica are the pulse of earth’s climate. Recently they have attracted world’s attention as they are the first one to be affected by human induced climate change, the effects of which have beginning to show up. For example, Arctic Ocean experienced the lowest sea-ice extent in 2007 & it has been estimated that seasonally ice free Arctic Ocean may be a reality after about 30 years from now. In view of this, it’s very important to understand the processes occurring in Polar Regions as they may help humanity in better preparing against the onslaught of climate change. Several countries of the world are engaged in this endeavor with India being one of the select few that have presence both in Arctic & Antarctica. India’s Antarctic Research programme, which was initiated in 1981, has taken the shape of a major national programme. The permanently manned station Dakshin Gangotri was the first station to be set up. Maitri, the second was established in 1988-89 on a rocky base, which stays free of snow almost all year round. India has extensively used a state-of-the-art research vessel named ORV Sagar Kanya for its Polar expeditions. ORV Sagar Kanya Maitri – India’s permanently manned station in Antarctica By virtue of its scientific activities in Antarctica, India was admitted as a Consultative Member of the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 in 1983. India acceded to the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources. There is to be protection of Antarctica’s fragile eco system and delicate flora and fauna for half a century. An Antarctic Study Centre was set up by the DOD at Goa. So far 28 scientific expeditions have been launched on a regular basis including three expeditions to the Southern Oceans for carrying out research in the thrust areas of polar science. A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife. A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man. Genius Satyanarayana 10. Barack Obama I knew that....I just have that effect on people....one day you too can be like me.... Believe it! Ps. Stop picking different numbers. I am your idol, just accept it !!! Hahahaha !Have a nice laugh. Have a Nice DAY !!! A couple in the IT industry gave birth to a set of twins. Guess what they named them? One day Maths teacher asked her students..... One day Maths teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name. Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down. It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed in the papers. That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and listed what everyone else had said about that individual. On Monday she gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was smiling. ‘Really?’ she heard whispered. ‘I never knew that I meant anything to anyone!’ and, ‘I didn’t know others liked me so much,’ were most of the comments. No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. She never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn’t matter. The exercise had accomplished its purpose. The students were happy with themselves and one another. That group of students moved on. Several years later, one of the students was killed in ’Kargil’ war and his teacher attended the funeral of that special student. She had never attended Funeral of a serviceman before. He looked so handsome, so mature. The place was packed with his friends. One by one those who loved him took a last walk. The teacher was the last one to bless . As she stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer came up to her. ‘Were you Sanjay’s math teacher?’ he asked. She nodded: ‘yes.’ Then he said: ‘Sanjay talked about you a lot.’ After the funeral, most of Sanjay’s former classmates were there. Sanjay’s mother and father were there, obviously waiting to speak with his teacher. ’We want to show you something,’ his father said, taking a wallet out of his pocket ‘They found this on Sanjay when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it.’ Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. The teacher knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which she had listed all the good things each of Sanjay’s classmates had said about him. ‘Thank you so much for doing that,’ Sanjay’s mother said. ‘As you can see, Sanjay treasured it.’ All of Sanjay’s former classmates started to gather around. Arjun smiled rather sheepishly and said, ‘I still have my list. It’s in the top drawer of my desk at home.’ Prithwiraj’s wife said, ‘ Prithwiraj asked me to put his in our wedding album. ’I have mine too,’ Rashmi said. ‘It’s in my diary’ Then Deepali, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group. ‘I carry this with me at all times,’ Deepali said and without batting an eyelash, she continued: ‘I think we all saved our lists’ That’s when the teacher finally sat down and cried. She cried for Sanjay and for all his friends who would never see him again. The density of people in society is so thick that we forget that life will end one day. And we don’t know when that one day will be. So please, tell the people you love and care for, that they are special and important. Tell them, before it is too late.. If you’re ‘too busy’ to take those few minutes right now to forward this message on, would this be the VERY first time you didn’t do that little thing that would make a difference in your relationships? Remember, you reap what you sow. What you put into the lives of others comes back into your own. MALE VS.FEMALE BRAIN In the hospital the relatives gathered in the waiting room, where their family member lay gravely ill. Finally, the doctor came in looking tired and somber. “I’m afraid I’m the bearer of bad news,” he said as he surveyed the worried faces. “The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant. It’s an experimental procedure, very risky but it is the only hope. Insurance will cover the procedure, but you will have to pay for the brain yourselves.” The family members sat silently as they absorbed the news. After a great length of time, someone asked, “Well, how much does a brain cost?” The doctor quickly responded, “5,000 for a male brain, and 200 for a female brain.” The moment turned awkward. Men in the room tried not to smile, avoiding eye contact with the women , but some actually smirked. A man unable to control his curiosity, blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask, “Why is the male brain so much more?” The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and explained to the entire group, “It’s just standard pricing procedure. We have to mark down the price of the female brains, because they’ve actually been used.” SHARE THIS WITH A SMART WOMAN WHO NEEDS A LAUGH AND WITH THE MEN YOU THINK CAN HANDLE IT!
