2 Minutes of the Previous Meeting

2.1 Agreed: The minutes of the meeting held on the 8 June 2010 were
                          agreed

3 Matters Arising

3.1 Noted: (Item 1.1.2 refers). The sub committee considered the request
for VSC membership from the Students’ Union. Whilst It was
noted that the university was working to encourage student
involvement in validation, with participation in some form now
being a requirement, members felt unclear over the role of a
Students’ Union member on the sub committee and felt that
this would be hard to define owing to the detailed
development work that was undertaken. It was agreed that this
would be fed back to the Students’ Union.
                                                           Action: Chair, Secretary to VSC

3.2 Noted: MRes Arts Practice, CCW (Camberwell/Wimbledon). The
Subcommittee noted that this course had been approved by
Chair’s Action prior to the meeting owing to urgency
surrounding AHRC Studentships. The Chair thanked the
Readers involved for their help in getting final approval
progressed at such short notice (also applies to 3.3 and 3.4).

3.3 Noted: MA Curating, CCW (Wimbledon). The subcommittee noted
that this course had been approved by Chair’s Action prior to
the meeting owing to the urgency surrounding AHRC
                          Studentships.

3.4 Noted: MA Art Theory, CCW (Wimbledon). The subcommittee noted
that this course had been approved by Chair’s Action prior to
the meeting owing to the urgency surrounding AHRC
                          Studentships.

3.5 Secretary’s FdA Fashion Design and Technology (LCF Collaborative
Update validation with the Istanbul Moda Academy (IMA) (Minute 6.5
refers). Members to note that, following the VSC meeting held
on 6 July 2010, Academic Affairs have been informed by
colleagues at LCF that this course is planned to run from
                          2010/11.

4 Proposal for Title Change

4.1 From: BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles
        To: BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles

4.1.1 Discussion: 1. Members considered the request for title change, and
questioned whether the proposal indicated a shift in
                                rationale of the course.
                              2. The subcommittee was informed that the college was
undertaking a subject review of textiles, as opposed to
an actual course review of Surface Textiles.

4.1.2 Agreed: Members felt that further reassurance was needed to ensure
that the title accurately reflected the original content of the
course, as validated. It was agreed that Academic Affairs
should check over the course file and handbook, and that
agreement would be sought through Chair’s Action.
                                                                        Action: VSC Secretary

5 Courses for Final Approval

Secretary’s Note: Items 5.1-5.3 related to courses originally approved by VSC Chair’s
Action to follow the Major Changes procedure. However, as more extensive changes were
proposed, which included the re-writing of course learning outcomes, it was requested
that paperwork be received by the sub-committee for final approval.

5.1 BA (Hons) Fine Art, CCW (Chelsea)

5.1.1 Discussion: 1. The sub committee found the supporting paperwork to
                                 be very thorough.

                              2. It was noted that the awarding body listed on the
programme specification should read ‘University of the
                                 Arts London’.

5.1.2 Agreed: Subject to the revision of the Programme Specification as at
5.1.1.2 above, the course was given FINAL APPROVAL.

5.2 BA (Hons) Graphic Design Communication, CCW (Chelsea)

5.2.1 Discussion: 1. The sub committee found the supporting paperwork to
                                 be very thorough.

                              2. It was noted that the programme specification would
need to be updated as detailed at 5.1.1.2

5.2.2 Agreed: Subject to the revision of the programme specification as at
5.1.1.2, the course was given FINAL APPROVAL.

5.3 BA (Hons) Textile Design, CCW (Chelsea)

5.3.1 Discussion: 1. The sub committee found the supporting paperwork to
                                 be very thorough.

                              2. It was noted that the programme specification would
need to be updated as detailed at 5.1.1.2
5.3.2 Agreed: Subject to the revision of the programme specification as at
5.1.1.2, the course was given FINAL APPROVAL.

5.4 MA Screen: Acting, CSM (Drama Centre London)

5.4.1 Discussion: 1. Members noted that the discrepancy over the IELTS
score had been responded to within the reader
comments, and noted that this had been confirmed as
6.5 in line with the university requirements.

Secretary’s Secretary’s Update: colleagues at CSM have since
Update confirmed that the IELTS score should be recorded as
7.0. It was noted that ‘this may seem at odds with the
level required by the BA offer to Acting & Directing,
but as this course is neither planned as or is in
actuality a progression from the undergraduate offer,
and the focus of activity is different, this is not seen as
a problem locally’. All course documentation has been
                              amended.

                          2. The sub-committee considered the format of the
programme specification which was noted to be very
long. However, members agreed that the general
layout was clear and found the section on admissions to
be very helpful. It was felt that consideration should be
given to a standard, university template for programme
specifications, drawing together good practice from
                             across all colleges.

                          3. Members noted reference to ‘holistic assessment’
within the assessment methods in the programme
specification and questioned whether students would
understand this terminology. It was felt that further
explanation should be provided to students to ensure
                             the language is explicit.

5.4.2 Agreed: 1. Consideration of a standard university template for
programme specifications should be considered at a
                             future meeting of the sub-committee.
                                                             ACTION: VSC Secretary

                          2. Subject to consideration of 5.4.1.3, the course was
                             given FINAL APPROVAL.

5.5 MA Screen: Directing, Writing, CSM (Drama Centre London)

5.5.1 Discussion: 1. As at 5.4.1.1 and 5.4.1.3

5.5.2 Agreed: Subject to consideration of 5.4.1.3, the course was given FINAL
                       APPROVAL.
5.6 MA Character Animation, CSM (Drama Centre London)

5.6.1 Discussion: 1. The Subcommittee noted the high standard of
                            paperwork submitted for consideration.

                         2. Members noted the course team responses in relation
to the PgDip exit award, which confirmed that this will
not be accommodated within the structure of the MA.

                         3. In relation to student involvement, members
appreciated that clear consultation had been
undertaken in the preparatory stage, but it did not
appear to be as evident through the developmental
stages. The subcommittee felt satisfied with the
response to the reader comment in relation to this, but
noted that, as student consultation is now a
requirement in validation, it was important to ensure
involvement in the development and proposals of
courses. Members felt more could be done in alerting
quality experts within the colleges of what is expected
                            in relation to this requirement.

                         4. Members questioned whether more information was
necessary under the Admissions Procedures section of
the Programme Specification (page 28). The sub-
committee concluded that much of the detail had been
included under the Admissions Policy section (page 26).
Members felt the course team should revisit these
sections to ensure that the admissions process is clear
to students. In addition to this, the sub-committee
noted that reference to the ‘Equal Opportunities Policy’
will need to be updated from September 2010.

                         5. There was some concern as to whether consultation
had taken place with colleagues at LCC in relation to the
MA Animation course. Members were informed that
the MA Character Animation course at CSM has been
developed from the long-established PgDip Character
Animation course within the college and that full
consideration to this development was given at the
                            University’s Academic Planning Committee. Members
also agreed that the relocation of the course to the
School of Performance at CSM highlighted its
distinctiveness from the animation course at LCC.

5.6.2 Agreed: 1. The sub-committee felt it necessary to alert quality
experts within the colleges to the expectations of
involving students in the validation process. It was
agreed that it would be helpful to conduct an
evaluation over the summer of how this has worked in
                                order to draw practice together.
                                                                 Action: VSC Secretary

                            2. The course was given FINAL APPROVAL

5.7 MA Performance Design and Practice, CSM (School of Art)

5.7.1 Discussion: Members noted the thorough admissions procedure which was
                         found to be very clear.

5.7.2 Agreed: Following brief discussion, the course was given FINAL
                         APPROVAL

5.8 BA (Hons) Fashion, CSM (School of Fashion & Textile Design)

5.8.1 Discussion: 1. The sub-committee welcomed the discussion recorded
in the Stage II minutes and validation log relating to the
publishing of additional costs as a means of improving
and expanding information provided to students. This
was noted to be an area of good practice which should
be shared across the University and might be useful
when considering future requests for transparency
which may make such information a requirement.

5.8.2 Agreed: 1. Members agreed that work undertaken by CSM to
improve and expand on information provided to
students regarding additional costs should be referred
to HEQCG as a means of informing discussion around
student expectations and requests for transparency.
                                              Action: VSC Secretary/HEQCG Secretary

                            2. The course was given FINAL APPROVAL

5.9 BA (Hons) Textile Design, CSM (School of Fashion & Textile Design)

5.9.1 Discussion: The paperwork was noted to be very thorough. Members were
satisfied that all reader comments had been responded to, and
there were no further points for discussion.

5.9.2 Agreed: The course was given FINAL APPROVAL

5.10 BA (Hons) Directing, CSM (Drama Centre London)

5.10.1 Discussion: Members noted that the IELTS requirement had been listed as
7.5 in the programme specification, which was higher than that
originally listed for the MA Screen: Directing, Writing course.

5.10.2 Agreed: 1. The Course Team should revisit the Programme
Specification to ensure the correct IELTS level is
reflected. An amended copy should be sent to
                                Academic Affairs.

                            2. Subject to the revision of the Programme Specification
as identified in 5.10.2.1, the course was given FINAL
                               APPROVAL

5.11 BA (Hons) Acting, CSM (Drama Centre London)

5.11.1 Discussion: As at 5.10.1.

5.11.2 Agreed: 1. As at 5.10.2.1

                            2. Subject to the revision of the Programme Specification
as identified in 5.10.2.1, the course was given FINAL
                               APPROVAL

5.12 BA (Hons) Ceramic Design, CSM (School of Graphic & Industrial Design)

5.12.1 Discussion: 1. Members found the paperwork to be very thorough.

                            2. The sub-committee noted that the university will be
required to publish teaching hours as a requirement in
the next few years. All handbooks and websites will
need to ensure that they reflect this information.

5.12.2 Agreed: The course was given FINAL APPROVAL

5.13 BA (Hons) Criticism, Communication and Curation: Art and Design, CSM
(School of Fashion & Textile Design)

5.13.1 Discussion: 1. Members noted reference to ‘holistic assessment’
within the assessment methods in the programme
specification and questioned whether students would
understand this terminology. It was felt that further
explanation should be provided to students to ensure
                               the language is explicit.

                            2. Members felt that the course outcomes identified in the
programme specification were quite generic and did not
reflect the specific nature of the aims of the course.
The sub committee felt that these should be revisited
                               by the course team.

5.13.2 Agreed: The course was given CONDITIONAL APPROVAL. The sub-
committee requested the course team to revisit the course
outcomes and revisions to be submitted for consideration by
                         the Chair of VSC.
                                                 Action: CSM Members, VSC Secretary
5.14 BA (Hons) Performance Design and Practice, CSM (School of Art)

5.14.1 Discussion: The paperwork was noted to be very thorough. Members were
satisfied that all reader comments had been responded to, and
there were no further points for discussion.

5.14.2 Agreed: The course was given FINAL APPROVAL

5.15 BA (Hons) Product Design, CSM (School of Graphic & Industrial Design)

5.15.1 Discussion: 1. The paperwork was noted to be very thorough and
members were satisfied that all reader comments had
                               been responded to.

                            2. Members reconsidered points previously raised at
5.4.1.2 in relation to the length of the programme
                               specification. The sub-committee reiterated that
visually the layout was very nice, but felt that some of
the sections were so detailed that the content seemed
more relevant to the course handbook (assessment
                               section specifically raised here).

5.15.2 Agreed: The course was given FINAL APPROVAL

5.16 BA (Hons) Graphic Design, CSM (School of Graphic & Industrial Design)

5.16.1 Discussion: The paperwork was noted to be very thorough and members
were satisfied that all reader comments had been responded
                         to.

5.16.2 Agreed: The course was given FINAL APPROVAL

5.17 BA (Hons) Jewellery Design, CSM (School of Fashion & Textile Design)

5.17.1 Discussion: 1. Members noted reference to ‘holistic assessment’
within the assessment methods in the programme
specification and questioned whether students would
understand such terminology. It was felt that further
explanation should be provided to students to ensure
                               the language is explicit.

                            2. Members noted the reader comment in relation to the
entry requirements for the course and agreed that the
course team should address these to ensure they are
                               more explicit.

5.17.2 Agreed: The course was given FINAL APPROVAL
5.18 PgDip Professional Graphic Design Studies, LCC (Faculty of Design)

5.18.1 Discussion: The paperwork was noted to be very thorough and members
were satisfied that all reader comments had been responded
                         to.

5.18.2 Agreed: The course was given FINAL APPROVAL

5.19 Introduction to Design Programme, LCC (Faculty of Design)

5.19.1 Discussion: 1. Members noted the change in title.

                             2. Members were satisfied that all reader comments had
                                been responded to.

                             3. The sub-committee noted that student consultation had
not been recorded on the paperwork submitted for final
approval. It was noted that, in future, courses that do
not explicitly identify student involvement will not be
approved. LCC members confirmed that students had
been consulted on this course development and
members felt that this should be formally confirmed to
                                Academic Affairs.

                             4. Members considered how the provision will be
described on the UCAS website. It was agreed that it
would be useful to have an entry profile that
distinguishes between students on the Introduction to
Design Programme and the first year of the designated
degree course. The sub-committee felt this area should
be re-examined by the course team.

5.19.2 Agreed: 1. The sub-committee APPROVED the title change to
Introduction to Design Programme (previously referred
                                to as ‘Year Zero’)

                             2. Subject to the action of 5.19.1.3 and 5.19.1.4, the
                                course was given FINAL APPROVAL.

5.20 BA (Hons) Fashion: Hair and Make-up (Top Up award), LCF (School of Media &
         Communication)

5.20.1 Discussion: 1. Members noted that the learning outcomes and
distinctive features for all BA (Hons) Top Up courses at
LCF are generic which made it very difficult to identify
course specific outcomes (although it was noted that
more detail is provided to students within the Unit
Handbooks). Members were informed that the Top Up
courses would undergo major changes in the 2010/11
academic year and it had been proposed that the
distinctiveness of all provision is enhanced through this
process. The sub-committee supported these plans and
felt strongly that the distinctive experience for each of
the Top Up courses should be made clear to students
                                 and also for potential employers.

                              2. The title change was noted (previously BA (Hons)
                                 Fashion: Hair and Make Up)

5.20.2 Agreed: The course was given FINAL APPROVAL on the basis that the
college work towards more course-specific learning outcomes
through the major changes process in 2010/11.

5.21 BA (Hons) Hair and Make-up for Film and TV (Top Up award), LCF (School of
         Media & Communication)

5.21.1 Discussion: 1. As at 5.20.1 above

                              2. The title change was noted (previously BA (Hons) Hair
and Make Up for Film and TV)

5.21.2 Agreed: The course was given FINAL APPROVAL on the basis that the
college work towards more course-specific learning outcomes
through the major changes process in 2010/11.
