Final Project Assignment The Scenario Dr. Glen Parker, D.V.M. has just graduated from veterinary college and is opening a veterinary clinic in Otter Creek, Wisconsin. The clinic will specialize in small animal services for dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, gerbils, birds, and exotics. No large animals such as horses or cows will be serviced. The critical information for the office is as follows: Parker Animal Clinic 9003 Jackson Boulevard Otter Creek, WI 54999 Phone: 920-555-6886 Fax: 920-555-8713 E-mail: Dr.Glen@parkeranimalclinic.com You have been hired as the clinic office manager due to your various skills in using Publisher, knowledge about design principles, ability to use other office software and your outstanding soft skills. The graphic design work will be divided into projects. The necessary instructions to get started are included for each project. You will use all of your expert design skills when creating these publications. Remember to use a certain “theme” throughout the projects to convey consistency in design in the publications so customers grow accustomed to seeing certain objects that remind them of the clinic. Before beginning a project, review the design tips in your Non-Designers textbook and any notes that you took in class to assist with your designing tasks. If pre-created files, images, and documents are to be used, the files can be found in the: I:\JPurkapile files\Graphics folder. All projects need to be submitted to I:\__Submit Student Work\JPurkapile\Graphic folder. One project will be printed in color, be sure to follow the assignment instructions. Assignment 1 – Logo Dr. Parker has asked you to submit possible logo designs from which he may choose for the Parker Animal Clinic. Remember this will be on every published piece, on the front of the building, etc. so it is important to convey the right look and feel of your organization. 1. Research veterinary offices to view their logos and help hone your ideas for a great logo for Dr. Parker’s office. 2. Sketch three potential logo layouts on a piece of paper first. This will help organize your thoughts on design. 3. The logo needs to contain the name of the clinic. 4. It should measure no more than 2” wide by 2” tall. Page 1 of 7 Graphics & Print Media 5. From the Publication type, choose Blank Page Sizes. 6. Choose size Letter Portrait (8.5 x 11). 7. Create your logo. 8. Group all objects into one object. 9. Save the object as a .jpg file. 10. 11. Save the file as Your Last Name_logo. Submit work to: I:\__Submit Student Work\JPurkapile\Graphic folder. ASSIGNMENT DUE DATE: Wednesday, April 22 at the end of class. Turn in your three sketches as well. See Logo Rubric for grading information. Assignment 2 – Letterhead Dr. Parker frequently sends letters to distributors of equipment and supplies as well as the occasional letter to clients. Dr. Parker would like an attractive letterhead using the new logo. 1. From the Publication type, choose Blank Page Sizes. 2. Choose size Letter Portrait (8.5 x 11). 3. Create your letterhead. Assignment 3 – Business Card Dr. Parker would like business cards that he can hand out to people who come into the clinic, as well as to distribute when he is out conducting business or attending various business functions. a. Sketch two potential business card layouts on a piece of paper first. This will help organize your thoughts on design. b. From the Publication type, choose Business Cards. c. Turn in your sketches as well. Assignment 4 – Price List Customers have difficulty remembering the quoted prices for veterinary services needed for cats and dogs. Dr. Parker has asked you to prepare an attractive price list to distribute to customers. 1. From the Publication type, choose Blank Page Sizes. 2. Choose size Letter Portrait (8.5 x 11). 3. Dr. Parker has a typed a paragraph that he wants inserted as the introductory parpagraph. The text file is called Para.rtf and is located on: I:\JPurkapile files\Graphics folder. 4. Displayed to the right is the service and fee information that you’ll need to include in the document. 5. Dr. Parker has requested some parameters for the price list: a. Information is organized and easy to read b. Graphically pleasing c. Colorful d. Lots of contrast to keep the customers visual interest e. The logo is listed somewhere on the document. 6. Page 3 of 7 Graphics & Print Media Assignment 5 – Flyer The members of the staff at the Parkway Animal Clinic have decided to hold an open house to meet potential clients. You have agreed to develop and post flyers all around town to advertise the open house. 1. From the Publication type, choose Blank Page Sizes. 2. Choose size Letter Portrait (8.5 x 11). 3. All the contact information for the clinic must be on the flyer, as well as the date/time for the event: Saturday, May 9, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 4. The activities to highlight for the day include: a. Meet Dr. Parker and his staff b. Pet owners can bring their pet and tour the clinic c. Free treats for pets and their owners d. A Smartest Pet Contest e. Pet pictures will be taken by an area photographer for only $5.00 5. Save the file as Your Last Name_flyer. 6. Submit work to I:\__Submit Student Work\JPurkapile\Graphic folder. ASSIGNMENT DUE DATE: Wednesday, April 29 at the end of class. Assignment 6 – Postcard Dr. Parker wants to advertise via direct mail for the open house. 1. From the Publication type, choose Postcards. 2. Scroll down to the bottom under Blank Sizes, choose 1/4 Letter 5.5 x 4.25 – Landscape in the Page size list. 3. Include all of the important information from the flyer on the postcard. 4. Save the file as Your Last Name_postcard. 5. Submit work to I:\__Submit Student Work\JPurkapile\Graphic folder. ASSIGNMENT DUE DATE: Monday, May 4 at the end of class. Assignment 7 – Newsletter Dr. Parker would like a four-page newsletter that can be distributed at the open house. He has written several articles that you can use along with some paid advertisements from which you can choose. Make sure you have ample white space on your pages and be sure to intersperse graphics and/or small stories/ads to prevent having too much gray (text) on a page. Be sure to leave enough gutter space between columns. 1. From the Publication type, choose Newsletter. 2. Scroll down to the bottom under Blank Sizes, choose size Letter Booklet (8.5 x 11). You will be asked to automatically add pages, click yes. Page 4 of 7 Graphics & Print Media 3. Include a table of contents on the first page, as well as the name, address, and numbers of the clinic along with Dr. Parker’s name and email address somewhere on the first page. 4. The masthead is called Companion Capers. 5. You will choose which text files and ads to use from the list of data files. You DO NOT have to use all of the files, as the information you didn’t use from this publication can be placed in the next quarterly newsletter. 6. The articles listed below can be found in the I:\JPurkapile files\Graphics folder. Print out from Technology Center - Monday, May 11 at the beginning of class. Be prepared to share your creations with the class on Monday, May 11.
