For 85 years, Siemens has been active in Pakistan, where it holds leading positions in its Industry, Energy and Healthcare Sectors. Siemens IT Solutions and Services functions across all three Sectors. Siemens is the country’s No. 1 supplier of high-voltage grid stations, switchgear products and systems, power distribution and power transformers, and network consultancy. The company has also built a new 220 kV power transformer factory, and is poised to meet the demand in this sector nationally and in the region. In fiscal 2008 (October 1, 2007 – September 30, 2008), sales to customers in Pakistan amounted to almost EUR 200 million. New orders also totaled nearly EUR 200 million. With a workforce of 1 450 employees, Siemens is one of the most important employers in the country and the largest employer of engineering graduates.
In fiscal 2008, Siemens in Pakistan scored major successes in the following Sectors:
Industry Siemens maintained its leadership position in the Industry Sector by winning the several orders. Those included an order for electro mechanical refurbishment, underground external electrification and a street light system for the Defense Housing Authority (DHA) Phase V (Lahore). We also won an order from the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) for the electrification of the city of Mangla and we flawlessly completed electrical, mechanical and civil works (Train III) at ENI Pakistan.
Energy Siemens received an order for the 500 kV Rewat substation located near Islamabad. In addition, the Ministry of Energy and WATER (MEW), Afghanistan placed an order for switchboards - that was a big milestone. Work on the first state-of-the-art Karachi 1
Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) load dispatch center project is going forward and it will be completed in 2009.
Siemens’ success in steam turbines continued with the sale of a 47 MW state-of-theart steam turbine SST-600 for an Independent Power Producer (IPP). It’s expected to reach its commercial operation by 2010. In April 2008, DHA Cogen Ltd., a desalination plant that will provide 94MW power and 3 million gallons of potable water per day, started its commercial operations. This is one of our most prestigious projects in the country.
Healthcare Siemens continued to establish itself in Pakistan as an innovative technology trendsetter by obtaining orders from Pakistan Atomic Energy. They ordered four linear accelerators and two OPEN BORE virtual simulation CT scanners. They also ordered the latest integrated oncology solution from Siemens that will be installed at three of their thirteen medical centers in Pakistan. Atomic Energy Medical centers are ranked among Pakistan’s leading cancer treatment and nuclear medicine centers – patients there are diagnosed and treated at a minimal cost.
Cross-Sector-Business For Siemens IT Solutions and Services (SIS), the biggest highlight of the year was its breakthrough in the pharmaceuticals and home appliances industries with its SAP ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) solution offerings. At the same time, SIS strengthened its ties with its current customer base and signed up an international as well as a few local SAP implementation projects in the oil and gas industry. Another of the year’s historic milestones was the achievement of the go live of Phase A-1 of SAP implementation project for Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited.

The company's name first became known through the construction of the Indo-European telegraph line from London to Calcutta in 1870. Siemens' first office in what is now Pakistan opened in 1922. The Siemens Pakistan Engineering Company Ltd. was founded in 1953 as a private company, and in 1963 the company was reorganized as a public limited company. 2
Siemens is actively involved in Pakistan’s university education. In 1997, the company set up a program to award gold medals to the best engineering students at Pakistan’s universities. Siemens offers full scholarships to students in the fields of medicine, engineering and business, and runs a three-year apprenticeship course at its facility in Karachi. Siemens also demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility by providing relief for the victims of the earthquake in Kashmir in December 2005.
