Response is an essential component of the ELA program. Préscolaire/ preschool (bilingual) – Marie-Andrée Veilleux & Terry Saba This workshop will explore different facets of the preschool program including the Role of Play, and Information & Communication Technologies. Teachers who are interested in learning more about these topics and sharing experiences and practices with colleagues are welcome to attend. Working with Rubrics (bilingual) – Marie-Andrée Veilleux, Terry Saba & Genny Villa This workshop will focus on defining the practice of using rubrics in the evaluation process. Teachers will have the opportunity to examine rubrics in various subjects and create rubrics for their specific needs. As well, a focus on involving students in the creation of rubrics will be discussed. The Culture of Professionalism (bilingual) – Marie-Andrée Veilleux & Terry Saba Why invest time in professional enrichment? Teachers discuss and learn about opportunities to expand their repertoire of professional training. Time to share experiences and ways to benefit from additional professional development will be made available. It’s all about exploring the professional ethic. Portfolio Assessment (bilingual) - Marie-Andrée Veilleux, Terry Saba & Genny Villa Collection, selection, reflection, evaluation, and celebration, the stages of portfolio development, will be examined. Teachers will share experiences, questions, and related issues. Both paper and digital portfolios will be the focus. Culture in the Schools (bilingual) - Marie-Andrée Veilleux & Terry Saba This workshop offers a great opportunity to explore the possibilities of building cultural projects that support your school’s educational project and involve teams of teachers. Engaging the Learner (Elementary and Secondary) – Terry Saba & Sandy Farr Strategies to facilitate learning are presented in a hands-on manner. Teachers will acquire a clear understanding of the many strategies that can be used to engage the learner. Preparing Yourself and Your Students for the Secondary V English Language Arts Exam Marsha Gouett Half-day Workshop This workshop is designed for teachers of English Language Arts who wish to have a clearer understanding of the M.E.L.S. Secondary School Leaving Examination. It will be of particular interest to those new to teaching Secondary V. Using the Uniform Examination Information Document and other pertinent materials, we will examine the administration, invigilation, and evaluation of the final exam. The forms of writing and some teaching strategies will also be addressed, and there will be opportunity for teacher feedback and questions. This workshop will provide an introduction to the principles of differentiation. MATHEMATICS ELEMENTARY Learning Assessment for Novices - Tom Booth This workshop gives details of the need to differentiate between Assessment OF Learning vs Assessment FOR Learning. We have to re-think the relationship between assessment and student motivation. Rubrics Presentation - Tom Booth This workshop studies the definition, characteristics and the benefits of a rubric evaluation. The members of the workshop create a variety of rubrics and develop sets of descriptors to customize their evaluations. Situational Problem Solving in Elementary Mathematics - Tom Booth The purpose of this session is to discover a tool that will help students have better success solving situational problems. This workshop will focus on the definition of situational problems, links to problem-based learning and tools to solving problems. Nelson Math Workshop – Tom Booth Nelson Math combines literacy and numeracy into an integrated program that is student friendly. Workshops can be organized by cycle level or by specific grade level according to the needs of the teachers/school. SECONDARY Evaluation – Secondary Cycle 1 - Tom Booth This workshop investigates the new QEP rules for evaluating students at the Secondary level. Topics include the evaluation process, respecting differences, conformity with the QEP, collaboration with teachers and reporting of results. Secondary Cycle 1 and Reform - Tom Booth This workshop introduces QEP topics including the definition of a competency, subject specific and cross curricular competencies along with broad areas of learning. A final section deals with tools of the QEP – time allocation, school organization and problem-based learning. Building Secondary Cycle Teams - Tom Booth This workshop is to introduce Secondary Cycle 1 teachers to the cooperative world of cycle teams. One of the biggest barriers to reform has been the fact that teachers have always taught with closed doors and stayed completely absent from one another. This workshop will illustrate how teachers can pool their energy and resources to maximize student learning through cooperation and collaboration with teachers of different subjects and by using shared projects and activities. Reform + QEP + Math = Success - Tom Booth This workshop introduces Secondary Math teachers to the QEP and the new math program established for Secondary Cycle 1. Together We Are Better: Team Teaching in Physical Education and Health (elementary Physical Education and Heath teachers) – Sandy Farr (Phys Ed & Health) How can you increase your physical education and health minutes when you have little space left in the schedule? Explore ways to maximize your physical education workspaces. See how team work in teaching can be half the work and twice the fun! The ups and downs of various styles of team teaching are examined. The concept of two teachers, two classes and one gymnasium is explored through the use of games, video and discussion. This workshop contains both serious and humorous elements that can serve to promote team building in your staff. Starting a school Website In this workshop the teachers and student will learn how to begin the process of designing and developing a school website using a web authoring tool. The programs used may include Photoshop and Dreamweaver. Animation with Framethief and iMovie The students will explore the fundamentals of story boarding and movie making. They will then be shown how to use an animation program called Framethief and then iMovie. Using Powerpoint or Apple Works to make LA Books For the younger grades, this workshop helps the students make a simple alphabet book using Powerpoint or Apple Works. This can include digital pictures, audio and graphics. Creating mind/concept maps using Inspiration One of the latest teaching tools to appear is mind/concept maps. Students will learn how to use Inspiration, one of the best mind mapping programs out there, to create concept maps in all domains. This program is especially good when working with special needs students! Barbie in the Broad Areas of Learning (Workshop done by Brian Seltmann and Linda Henderson) Participants: Secondary, maximum 15, moderate technowledgy required, approx. 3 hours This workshop explore’s Barbie’s divorce from Ken through Media Literacy. Learn how to use iMovie as a production tool to enhance cross-curricular competencies and the broad areas of learning. Extension activities will be discussed for different subject areas. Creativity and ICT an inspiring amalgamation! New teachers – Support and strategies for new teachers – Holly Hampson This session is intended for teachers who are within the early years of their teaching career. Divided into three sections, this session is intended to provide new teachers with a chance to share, learn, and develop. The main issues that will be addressed include: Planning for success Classroom management strategies Professional development Managing expectations Available tools and resources INNER CITY (ICOR) Innovative Projects – From idea to practice – Elpi Argyrakopoulos Presentation of a cross-curricular, year-long project. The project can be implemented at the level of the class, the cycle or the school. Parental Involvment at school reaps rewards. Myth or reality? – Elpi Argyrakopoulos & Genny Villa The theoretical foundations regarding parental involvement in schools will be examined. Participants will be given practical ideas in order to motivate parents and get them involved in school life. How does the inner city child learn? Some activities and Best Practices will be introduced. 2) The Quebec Entrepreneurship Contest – How to receive funding for in-school projects – Marsha Gouett Half-day, in-school workshop This year marks the ninth annual version of the Quebec Entrepreneurship Contest (QEC). If your students organize educational, sports, community oriented cultural or artistic or technological or scientific activities or if they run a business or cooperative, your school should be participating in the QEC. Participation grants are usually awarded to projects meeting the established contest criteria, and outstanding projects may also be eligible to win cash prizes at the regional and provincial competion levels. This workshop outlines the QEC and how to compile a winning application package. The contest deadline is in March 2007. 3) Portfolios for the rest of us: Creating a professional portfolio – Holly Hampson This session targets teachers at all levels of practice – new, mid-career, and even those close to retirement! Topics explored surrounding the portfolio process include: Why a portfolio is useful to you What to include in a professional portfolio Collecting samples of work (while respecting confidentiality!) Choosing the appropriate format Participants will also be provided with a brief introduction to free online tools that can be used in the portfolio process.
