Sony Digital Camera The Sony FD Mavica digital camera is an easy-to-use, feature-rich camera that allows you to take both still photographs as well as recording MPEG movies of 5, 10, 15, and even up to 60 seconds. You can record your images onto a 3 ½” floppy diskette or onto a “memory stick”. The instructions in this handout will explain to you the basics of operating this camera. Parts of the Camera The photographs below show the important parts of the camera. Study these parts so you will better understand how to use the camera. Set to FD for diskette USB Connector Control button Program Mode button Display button Flash Indicator Focus Getting Started 1. Insert an IBM formatted high-density diskette in the diskette slot on the side of the camera with the top of the diskette toward the back of the camera. 2. Turn the camera on by sliding the On/Off switch to the right and releasing it. You should hear the camera give a “chime” to indicate that it is turned on. 3. Set the recording media button to FD for diskette, or MS for memory stick. Use FD unless you know that the camera has a memory stick inserted in it. 4. Check the LCD Backlight button to make sure that it is turned on. 5. Remove the lens cap from the camera, if you have not already done so. 6. Set the Play/Still/Movie button to the desired position. Use Still for still shot photographs, Movie for MPEG movies, and Play to see any photos or movies that are recorded on the diskette. 7. You are now ready to begin taking your photos and movies. 25 Taking Still Photographs After getting your camera turned on and properly set, you can take photographs by following these steps. 1. Point the camera at the image you wish to photograph. Use the LCD panel in the back of the camera to view the image. 2. Use the Zoom slide button to zoom in or out on the image as desired. 3. Press and hold the shutter button halfway down. A beep will sound and the image is frozen. However, the image has not yet been recorded. While the green indicator light is flashing, the exposure and focus of the captured image. When the indicator stops flashing, the camera is ready for recording. If you release the shutter button, the exposure and focus settings are lost. 4. Press the shutter button firmly down. You will hear the camera click and “RECORDING” appears on the LCD screen. When “RECORDING” disappears you can record your next picture. For information on how many still photographs or MPEG movies you can record on a diskette or memory stick, refer to the table below. This is also the ratio used by photo developing shops ** The maximum recording time in continuous recording 35 Using the Manual Focus button By pressing the manual focus button on the back on the camera, you can set the distance that you are from a subject to allow for a better focus. You can select from six different settings; macro (indicated by a tulip shape on the LCD), .5 m, 1.0 m, 3.0 m, 7.0 m, and infinity. In the macro mode, you can focus clearly on an object as close to the lens as about 3 cm (1 3/16”) from the lens, as shown in the close-up shot of one end of a computer mouse below. Using the Playback Mode on Your Camera Viewing your images is quick and simple. To view your photos on your camera, follow the instructions below. 1. Select the playback media using the MS/FD selector. Use FD for diskette. 2. Set the PLAY/STILL/MOVIE selector to PLAY. The last image taken will be shown on your LCD screen. 3. Press the  on the control button to display the menu bar on the LCD screen. Pressing the  will turn off the menu bar. 4. With the menu bar turned off, press the  or  on the control button to move through your list of photos on your diskette. Each time you press either of these buttons a new image will be displayed. 5. If the menu bar is displayed, you can use the  or the  to move from photo to photo on the diskette. 45 6. To delete any one of the photos, use the control button to move to the delete option, press down on the control button, then answer OK to remove the image. Pressing Cancel will stop the delete process for that image. To View Images on a PC Computer Using Windows You can easily view the images from your computer by following the instructions below. 1. Start the computer and insert the floppy disk into the diskette drive. 2. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop, then double-click the 3 ½” diskette drive (A:) . 3. Double-click the desired image file and the computer should open the image on your computer’s screen. 4. To view another image, click the 3 ½ Floppy (A:) button in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, then double-click another file icon. The next image will be displayed. 5. To close any of the images, click the X in the upper right corner of the image window, and that image will be closed. The image is not deleted from the disk however. 55
