   Lesson # 11
   Part 3
   Eternity = Heaven & Hell
                 Gehenna - Hell
 1067 γέεννα [geenna /gheh·en·nah/] n f. Of
    Hebrew origin 1516 and 2011; TDNT 1:657;
    TDNTA 113; GK 1147; 12 occurrences; AV
translates as “hell” nine times, and “hell fire +
3588 + 4442” three times. 1 Hell is the place
of the future punishment call “Gehenna” or
“Gehenna of fire”. This was originally the
valley of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, where
the filth and dead animals of the city were
cast out and burned; a fit symbol of the
wicked and their future destruction n: noun or
    neuter
Valley Of Hinnom
 "He burned incense in the Valley of the Son of
Hinnom, and burned his children in the fire,
according to the abominations of the nations
whom the Lord had cast out before the children of
    Israel." (2 Chronicles 28:3, NKJV)
 "And they have built the high places of Tophet,
which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to
burn their sons and their daughters in the fire,
which I did not command, nor did it come into My
    heart." (Jeremiah 7:31, NKJV)
 "And they built the high places of Baal which are
in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to cause their
sons and their daughters to pass through the fire
to Molech, which I did not command them, nor did
it come into My mind that they should do this
abomination, to cause Judah to sin.’" (Jeremiah
    32:35, NKJV)
 “Therefore behold, the days are coming,”
says the Lord, “when it will no more be called
Tophet, or the Valley of the Son of Hinnom,
but the Valley of Slaughter; for they will bury
in Tophet until there is no room." (Jeremiah
    7:32, NKJV)
 "therefore behold, the days are coming,” says
the Lord, “that this place shall no more be
called Tophet or the Valley of the Son of
Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter."
    (Jeremiah 19:6, NKJV)
                    Gehenna

 Probably because of these associations with
fiery destruction and judgment, the word
‘Gehenna’ came to be used metaphorically
during the intertestamental period as a
designation for hell or eternal damnation. In
the NT, the word is used only in this way and
never as a geographic place name.
           Activity
     What animal living today:
         Looks like otter

        Young have Teeth

         Tail like Beaver

 Poisonous snake-fang claws:
            Lays eggs

       Breast feeds young

           Webbed feet

           Amphibious

          Bill like a Duck
 We describe the unknown, with that which is
already known! We use a snake, otter,
beaver and duck to help us understand what
the REAL THING looks like. But unless you
had seen an actual picture of a duck-billed
platypus, you would not likely get it exactly
    right!
 God used this same principle in describing
heaven and hell. He uses things we
understand and see to describe things we
    don’t understand and cannot see!
                      Why?

 It is impossible for our five senses to detect
heaven and hell. How then can God describe
for us something that we cannot see, taste,
    touch, smell or hear?
 He employs the use of symbols.
                    A City

Heb. 11:16; 13:14 Hell = Gehenna
                        Valley of Hinnom
                        City Dump
 "But now they desire a better, that is, a
heavenly country. Therefore God is not
ashamed to be called their God, for He
has prepared a city for them." (Hebrews
    11:16, NKJV)
 "For here we have no continuing city, but
we seek the one to come." (Hebrews
    13:14, NKJV)
                  Barnes Notes
 "...It was the place where to throw all the dead
carcasses and filth of the city; and was
frequently the place of executions. The sight
was horrible, the air was polluted and to
preserve it in any manner of purity, it was
necessary to keep fires continually burning
there. The Jew’s extreme loathsomeness of the
place, the filth and putrefaction, the corruption
of the atmosphere, and the lurid fires blazing by
day and night, made it one of the most appalling
symbols with which a Jew was acquainted."

 4. Hell is a demonstration of God’s justice.
 "which is manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of
God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of
God, for which you also suffer; since it is a righteous thing

God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord
Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting
destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the

prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten
with many stripes. But he who did not know, yet committed
things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For

required; and to whom much has been committed, of him
they will ask the more." (Luke 12:47-48, NKJV)

prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”" (Mark
    12:40, NKJV)
 "For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world
through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter
end is worse for them than the beginning." (2 Peter 2:20-
