					        Essential Question:
What changes happen to mother and
 baby during prenatal development
 Prenatal – (pre) before birth (natal)
 Ovum – egg or female cell. Live 2-3 days
 Sperm – male cell. Can live up to 7 days
 Conception – fertilization; joining of male
and female cells
 Fallopian Tubes –place of conception.
Connects ovary to uterus
 Uterus – hollow, muscular organ;
nourishes embryo before birth
    Zygote – first stage of fertilized egg, weeks 1-2
    Embryo – second stage of development,
    weeks 3-8
    Fetus – name of baby from weeks 9 – birth
    Amniotic sac and fluid – form around fetus as a
    cushion for protection
    Placenta – receives blood and oxygen from
    mother
    Umbilical cord – connects baby to placenta.
    Allows blood and oxygen to travel to baby.
    Trimester – a period of about 3 months
