					PROTEIN FUNCTION
   ENZYMES IN ACTION
         PRE-LAB QUESTIONS

1. Describe the process of protein synthesis.

2. Why is it important for our cells to produce
   proteins?
       ELEPHANT TOOTHPASTE
            THE SET UP
• In the bottle: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) &
  Drop of Dish Soap
• In the flask: Yeast in warm water (the water
is there to activate (wake up) the yeast

• Hydrogen peroxide naturally decomposes
into water and oxygen over time:

          2H2O2  2H2O + O2 (gas)
       ELEPHANT TOOTHPASTE
             ACTION!
• The yeast will act as a catalyst (substance
which speeds up the rate of a chemical
  reaction).

• Write down what you think will happen
when the yeast is added to the bottle and
  why.
                   Add Yeast Now

• What happened when the yeast was
added to the bottle? Why did this happen?
      ELEPHANT TOOTHPASTE
          APPLICATION
• Enzymes act as catalysts in many
chemical reactions within your body. If
not for enzymes your food would rot in
your stomach before it had the time to
  be digested.

• How does the elephant toothpaste
  simulate the action of enzymes?
      ENZYME MODEL CARDS

• Look at the cards at your table. Write down
what you think is occurring on each card.

• Share with your table what you wrote.
  Discuss any differences.

• Develop definitions for the following terms:
  catabolic, anabolic, enzyme, activation
energy, substrate and active site based on
  your discussion.

          ENZYME READING

• Read the article silently to yourself. Choose 5
words from the article you feel are the most
important after reading. Write them down
and why you think they are important.

• Compare your 5 words with the 5 words your
table members chose. Discuss why you
  chose the words you did.

• Add any words from your group that you
feel are helpful after your discussion.
