   Classes of Drugs
Depressant:
-drugs that make you feel
   calm or sleepy. People
   take them to combat
   insomnia (can’t sleep).

ex. alcohol, barbiturates,
  sleeping pills, glue, lighter
  fluid, tranquilizers
     Stimulant
 Drugs that make you feel “up”
  or more energetic. People take
  them for increased energy /
  exhilaration / euphoria
 Excite & speed up CNS (central
  nervous system)
 Psychological dependence

 i.e. Cocaine, Speed, Crack,
  Cigarettes
    Hallucinogen
 Drugs  make you see
  things different from
  what is real. People
  take these drugs to feel
  ecstasy / relaxation
 i.e. LSD, Marijuana,
  Ecstasy, PCP
     Narcotics
 These drugs make you
  numb or deaden pain,
  slow everything down
 Highly addictive pain
  killers
 Derived from the
  poppy flower (opium)
 i.e. Heroin, Morphine,
  Demerol, Codeine
     Hormones
 Steroids are chemical
  derivatives of the male
  hormone testosterone.
  People take them to
  improve athletic
  performance
