Glass Artist Jana Kappeler to demonstrate at Center
On Saturday, March 27th visitors can watch glass artist Jana Kappeler of
Richmond, KY, demonstrate how she creates her stained glass works from 10:30
am – 3:30 pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
Jana Kappeler’s educational background is in horticulture and graphic arts. She
first became involved with stained glass as a collector. Jana explains, “The
inspiration for my work comes from my perennial gardens and researching
ancient cultures.” When Jana couldn’t find designs and color combinations she
wanted, she began to learn how to create her own designs. After some initial
instruction she taught herself stained glass.
Jana uses the copper foil method of construction for her stained glass pieces: the
pattern is drawn onto the glass, which is then cut. The edges of pieces are covered
with copper foil and the pattern is reassembled. Flux is brushed over the foil and
the pieces are then soldered together.
Jana also creates kiln-fused glass pieces that are either fully melted in a solid mass
in a removable mold, or “tack-fused” (the separate pieces of glass are connected
slightly by melting the glass in a kiln, but leaving surface dimension and texture).
Jana creates a range of kiln-fused works such as platters, small oval serving
dishes, candleholders, coasters and garden markers all available at the KY Artisan
Center.
Visit the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea on Saturday, March 27th from 10:30
am - 3:30 pm to see demonstrating artisan Jana Kappeler create stained glass
