Dear Parents/Guardians,

        All 8th Grade Science classes are about to start an exciting International Baccalaureate (IB)
unit on energy titled, “The Power of the Plug.” In order to promote student engagement, I have
paired this topic with the interactive tools Wikispaces and Edublogs. Integrating technology
throughout the unit supports the development of important 21st Century skills as both a consumer
and producer of information.

        The theme of “The Power of the Plug” is all about energy- uses, consumption, conservation,
and alternative sources. The overlying unit question is How can one person really make a difference in
the world? Through different activities, tasks, projects, and research, students will explore this
question using various resources and information from the Energy 8 Wiki. Ultimately, students will
answer this question by forging a personal path towards saving the Earth by creating a “Green

        Throughout this unit, I encourage both parents and students to frequently access the Energy
Wikispace at and navigate through a multitude of resources,
videos, and data. The Wikispace will also have various posted assignments, assessment rubrics, and
guidelines to follow. A few of these guidelines are outlined on the reverse side.

        I want to ensure that online safety and responsibility are maintained throughout this unit.
Students will not post any personal information in a blog nor will any personal information be shared
while others are blogging. For their safety, blog posts will be signed as FirstnameLastinitial
Period#TeacherLastInitial (example: EmilyR P3D). I have discussed this and many more blogging
terms and conditions with students in class today. Please discuss with your child, then sign and
return the form tomorrow.

        As a semi-new user to such tools I will try my best to input new, fresh, and updated
information; however, please expect a few glitches, bumps, and delays along the way! Therefore,
continue to utilize assignment books, e-Portal, and e-mail if you have any questions or concerns. We
are aiming to “go green” for this unit, albeit one step at a time!

      Please review some blogging terms and conditions on the reverse side, as well as a survey of
computer and Internet access.

                        Blogging Terms and Conditions:
1. Students using blogs are expected to act safely by keeping personal information out of their
posts. You agree not to post or give out your last name/family name, password, username, email
address, home address, school name, city, or other information that could help someone locate or
contact you.
2. Students using blogs agree not to share their username or password with anyone other than their
teacher or parents. You agree not to log in or post as another student.
3. Students using blogs are expected to treat blog spaces as classroom spaces. Speech that is
inappropriate for class is not appropriate in a blog. You are expected to conduct yourself in a
manner reflective of a representative of Western Middle School.
4. Academic blogs are tools for learning. As such, students will be constrained by various
requirements and rules of the classroom teacher.
5. Students using blogs take good care of computers by not dwindling or installing any applications
and not clicking on ads or competitions.
6. Students who do not abide by these terms and conditions may lose their opportunity to
participate in online posting or commenting to the class blog.
