The first grade Language Arts block consists of; whole group instruction using HMH as described below, a writing block using HMH as described
below, and small group instruction using McKenna/Walpole's differentiated reading instruction (phonological awareness & word recognition,
word recognition & fluency, fluency & comprehension, or vocabulary & comprehension). The HMH decodable readers can be used with word
recognition and fluency groups. HMH on and above leveled texts can be used with fluency & comprehension or vocabulary and comprehension
groups.

                                                     Small Group Instruction:
• Teachers who do NOT have the support of an assistant in their classroom during small group instruction, will need to introduce the words study
features on Day 1 and then use Day 2-5 to teach the McKenna/Walpole small group lessons (word recognition and fluency, fluency and
comprehension, or vocabulary and comprehension). Students can use seatwork time on Days 2-5 to practice their word study sort as outlined in
the Vocabulary and Word Study Teacher Edition.

• Teachers who DO have an assistant during small group instruction, could use the assistant to teach word study. Training will need to be
provided to the assistants from the Instructional Coach or Reading Specialists.
                                                    Important Pacing Guide Information:
• Activities listed in BLUE are the items that MUST be taught. All other items listed are optional. Teachers can choose to use them as
supplemental activities if time allows.
• Vocabulary Instruction MUST be incorporated in to the Interactive Read Alouds since we do not have vocabulary instruction in HMH.
• Writing Instruction - Teachers have the option of using HMH writing lessons from the Teacher's Edition or the Writing for Virginia Teacher’s
Manual, or implementing a Writer’s Workshop model as introduced by UVA instructors the last few years following the writing focus that is laid
out in the HMH TE. If teachers choose to use HMH, they do NOT need to teach every writing activity; instead they need to select the lessons that
meet the needs of their students.
• Grammar Lessons that are directly tied to SOLs are listed in BLUE and should be completed at some point during the week.
• Daily Proof Reading Practice, which is included in the Write to Narrate section, should be incorporated into some part of the Language Arts
block. (An option could be to use it as a morning work activity.)
• Morning Message - Teachers will need create their own morning message. Sample Morning Message: Good Morning, Today is Thursday,
October 25, 2012. We will be going to art and PE today. The story we will be reading today is about going to the Moon. Do you think it would
be fun to visit the moon? (You can use cloze sentences, leave off punctuation, beginning sounds, leave out sight words, etc.)
• Daily High Frequency Words: Teachers should introduce these words if they feel their students needs exposure to these words in order to
access the story. Mastery of these words is NOT necessary. Our mastery focus on high frequency words will occur during small group using the
Dolch words.
• Phonemic Awareness/Phonics Lessons - are listed in black because they are optional. Teachers can choose to use these lessons if they feel
that ALL students need exposure to that skill and if time allows.
• Daily Phonemic Awareness and Morning Message should be kept to no more than 10 minutes each day. These are meant to be quick
activities.
• Writing Prompts are optional to use during small group reading stations/seat work.
Pacing guides are always a work in progress. Please keep notes regarding your experiences with the pacing guides.

                                                     Small Group Instruction:
• Teachers who do NOT have the support of an assistant in their classroom during small group instruction, will need to introduce the words study
features on Day 1 and then use Day 2-5 to teach the McKenna/Walpole small group lessons (word recognition and fluency, fluency and

provided to the assistants from the Instructional Coach or Reading Specialists.
Please keep notes regarding your experiences with the pacing guides.

provided to the assistants from the Instructional Coach or Reading Specialists.

HMH on and above leveled texts can be used with fluency & comprehension or vocabulary and comprehension

provided to the assistants from the Instructional Coach or Reading Specialists.
