					Pleural Mesothelioma

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma or lung cancer is a very rare type of cancer. Among this type of cancer,
nearly 75% of the documented cases pertain to pleural mesothelioma. The main cause of
mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos fibers and asbestos dust. Mesothelioma is a
condition in which the mesothelium cells in the mesothelium lining start dividing rapidly.
Also, these cells start to outlive longer than the other cells. This causes tumors and leads
to mesothelioma.

What is pleural mesothelioma?

During the manufacture and use of asbestos, lots of asbestos dust and asbestos fibers are
released. The asbestos fibers are light, invisible and float in the air. They are easily
inhaled. Once they enter the nose, they travel in the respiratory tract and settle in the
lungs. The lungs have a lining called mesothelium. When the asbestos fibers come in
contact with the mesothelium lining, the mesothelium cells start to behave in an abnormal
manner. They start dividing rapidly and start to have longer life spans. This leads to fluid
build up in the mesothelium cells. This creates tumors in this part of the body. This
condition is known as pleural mesothelioma. It may also spread to other parts of the
body.

What are the symptoms of pleural mesothelioma?

The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are as follows:

    Chest pain
    Shortness of breath
    Panting
    Fever
    Loss of weight
    Coughing up blood
    Breathing abnormalities

Most of these symptoms are very similar to other diseases, like pneumonia. So, it is
difficult to correctly diagnose this disease. Also, it is quite complicated to diagnose this
disease correctly.

What are the types of pleural mesothelioma?

There are two types of pleural mesothelioma - cancerous and non-cancerous. When it is
cancerous, it is known as a malignant form of pleural mesothelioma. When it is non-
cancerous, it is known as benign form of mesothelioma.

What are the other details of pleural mesothelioma?
Pleural mesothelioma has no known cure. It mainly affects those people who work in
industries involved in the manufacture and use of asbestos. Realizing the harmful effects
of asbestos, many countries like UK, USA and Japan have banned the use and
manufacture of asbestos. However, there are some countries, which have still not banned
asbestos. India has imposed a ban on all types of asbestos, except white asbestos. White
asbestos is also harmful. China has also not imposed a complete ban on asbestos. Since
this disease cannot be cured, the best solution would be to impose a complete ban on
asbestos and thus, prevent this disease completely.
