Research
Research Areas

The research activities to date have covered several areas. First, and most importantly, is the topic of
effort and benefit estimation of information systems and development models. Special consideration
was given to open source software and the associated development model. Empirical research in this
area was mostly based on mining the associated software repositories, and using the retrieved
information for effort estimation, efficiency comparisons using data envelopment analysis and
software evolution studies. The area of open source software also led over to doing research on user
innovation and innovation communities. Similarly, benefit and effort estimation together with
efficiency comparisons were performed in the area of ERP implementation projects. Lastly in this
context, recent work was undertaken to explore new possibilities in risk management and IT-portfolio
management using the value-at-risk approach.

A second major area is enterprise modeling and especially ERP systems, where besides the topics
mentioned above, the decision-making process in selection an ERP package has been worked on. In
addition, a respective education program was developed.

Further topics include online communities and user interface design, especially for web applications.
For example, a web annotation service was developed, and game theory applied to online
communities. Lastly, within the last years, work was intensified on the topic of IT governance, notably
in the context of outsourcing relationships.

Teaching
Lectures

During the years, several different lectures have been held. This includes mostly lectures on master
level within the specialisation in Information Business, and the IS study program. In addition,
especially during the early years, lectures pertaining to the basic IS education for undergraduates have
been held („Elektronische Datenverarbeitung“). One main area has been information business /
management („Informationswirtschaft 2“, „Informationswirtschaft 3“, formerly named
„Informationsmanagement in Organisationen I“ respectively „II“), with content like organisation,
software development and software project management. Besides that, an education program in
enterprise modeling, especially SAP R/3 has been conceived („Unternehmensmodellierung mit SAP
R/3“), currently part of the IS study program. This is complemented with several seminars on current
topics like IT governance, interdisciplinary seminars with IT-law, and IT internship including a
bachelor thesis.
