Models and Simulations – System
  Dynamics Animated Model

             Dr Rob Alexander

                      1
           System Dynamics Modeling
• An approach to understanding
  the behavior of complex
  systems over time:
   Models internal feedback loops and
time delays that affect the behavior of
   the entire system.
• Created ca.1950s by Professor
  Jay Forrester of MIT
• Applications:
   • Population, ecological and
       economic systems
   • Management applications
   • System design
   • Generally, complex systems with
       feedback.
• Example:
   • Model of new product adoption For animated version of this model, see
       (ref: John Sterman 2001) SD_animated_model.pptx

                                             2
    System Dynamics Modeling

• Note the interactions between potential adopters,
  current adopters, and adoption rate

For animated version of this model, see
                              SD_animated_model.pptx

                          3
       System Dynamics Modeling
• By studying the model, various relationships can be derived:

                                                For animated version of
                                                this model, see
                                                SD_animated_model.pptx
