Applicants for DEACON IN FULL CONNECTION
DEADLINE – JANUARY 8 To be considered for action at the upcoming session of the Kentucky Annual Conference written material must be submitted digitally in Microsoft WORD format to the Director of Ministerial Services office. You can do this by e-mail to bom@kyumc.org. The DVD/videotape of your sermon and Bible Study must be mailed to your Barnabas Team postmarked by January 8. You are strongly urged to send your work by certified mail. PLEASE BE CAREFUL TO FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS.

PROCLAMING THE WORD SERMON








You shall prepare a sermon on — Class of 2010  Sermon text: Choice of any Lectionary B text found in the second column on pages 235-237 of the UM Book of Worship, beginning with September 6, 2009, through Thanksgiving Day; or any Lectionary C text found in third column on pages 227-228 of the UM Book of Worship, beginning with Advent through the first week of Epiphany. Class of 2011:  Sermon text: Choice of any Lectionary C text found in the third column on pages 235-237 of the UM Book of Worship, beginning with September 5, 2010, through Thanksgiving Day; or any Lectionary A text found in first column on pages 227-228, beginning with Advent through the first week of Epiphany. Class of 2012:  Sermon text: Choice of any Lectionary A text found in the first column on pages 235-237 of the UM Book of Worship, beginning with September 4, 2011, through Thanksgiving Day; or any Lectionary B text found in second column on pages 227-228 of the UM Book of Worship, beginning with Advent through the first week of Epiphany.  The sermon must be submitted in both manuscript and video form. The manuscript must be prepared before the sermon is preached. It shall be videotaped during a worship service.

Your sermon may be thematic or expository. The sermon shall reflect a clear understanding of the text and an appropriate application thereof. The sermon is to be approximately 20 minutes in length. The manuscript must be 5-8 pages in length. The manuscript should not be a transcription of the videoed sermon. You are not required to preach from the manuscript; however, you must preach the same text/sermon on the VHS/DVD. Include a one-page cover letter with the manuscript that details the composition of the congregation to whom the sermon was preached. Videotape the entire worship service. OR PROCLAIMING YOUR VOCATION You may present a videoed example of you showing how your practice of ministry proclaims the Word within the realm of your vocation. This must be videoed (VHS/DVD) in front of an audience. The written requirements will be an appropriate outline or lesson plan of the session AND should include: 1) How my ministry is an extension of the ministry of Jesus OR 2) How my ministry fulfills the mission of the church.

2 2) WORSHIP LEADERSHIP THE ORDER OF WORSHIP You shall prepare an evaluation of an Order of Worship in which you had planning and leadership. Provide the following information about your Order of Worship. 1. Detail the theological significance of each act of worship. Describe what is happening and why it occurs where it does in the service. 2. Explain the following: (a) Why were the hymns chosen and how do they fit the context of the service? (b) How does the Order of Worship help deliver the theme of the sermon? This section should be 2-3 pages, excluding the Order of Worship which may be a bulletin. 3. Video the worship service including the sermon (even though you may not have preached it).

TEACHING THE BIBLE

Prepare a Bible study with six lessons. The Bible study must be taught in your local church. Video one session of your Bible study. You may use resources to support your study; however, the outline and lesson plans must be your material  Class of 2010  Bible Study: Galatians (Those already Residents in Ministry have the option of agreeing on another biblical Book with their Barnabas Team)  Class of 2011:  Bible Study: Acts (Those who are already Residents in Ministry have the option of agreeing on another biblical Book with their Barnabas Team)  Class of 2012  Bible Study: TBA (Those already Residents in Ministry have the option of agreeing on another biblical Book with their Barnabas Team) SETTING On one page, double-spaced, in one or two paragraphs describe the setting of the study. Indicate the nature of the gathering (i.e. Sunday school class, Wednesday evening study, youth group, Bible school, etc.) Describe the make-up of the group (i.e. number, ages, socio-economic and educational backgrounds, type of community, etc.) I.

OUTLINE Prepare an outline for each of the six lessons. The outlines should incorporate the concepts you want your students to learn. This should be done on no more than three pages. Double space between major segments of the outline with single spacing within the segments. Each major segment should represent a lesson to be taught and the Scripture passages covered. For example: Lesson I. Key Concept (scripture covered) A. Supporting idea (scripture covered) B. Supporting idea (scripture covered) C. Supporting idea (scripture covered)

DETAILED LESSON PLANS Develop three detailed lesson plans. Use no more than three pages per lesson indicating all the elements you will use to actually teach these lessons. Full Connection Deacon Requirements Revised 11/9/2009

3 For example: Key Thought or Idea (Scripture covered) Learning Goals (What do you want your students to learn from this lesson?) 1. 2. 3. Teaching Strategies — Describe your methods for communicating the lessons. Lecture is only one method. Be creative. You may want to use more than one method in a lesson. Teaching Aids — Indicate teaching aids you will use (i.e. a list of questions, overhead transparencies, hand-outs, games, skits, quizzes, videos, etc.). Please include copies of materials you create for this lesson. Give proper documentation and credit for any material you did not create. IV. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY Make an annotated bibliography (only an annotated will be accepted) of all resources you will use to teach this study. Be sure to include all of the resources listed in the detailed lesson plans. VIDEOTAPE/DVD Submit a videotape or DVD of one of the three detailed lessons. The lesson should be at least 45 minutes. EVALUATION In no more than one page, evaluate the lesson you taught on video. What were the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson? What could you have done to make this lesson clearer? Did you communicate to the people the key concepts of the text?

THEOLOGY, CALL AND DOCTRINE DISCIPLINE

You shall submit written responses to Paragraph 330.5 in The Book of Discipline 2008. These are listed under (a) Theology, (b) Vocation and (c) The Practice of Ministry. You will find guidelines about the parameters of the response contained in this mailing under the heading "Guidelines For Submission Of All Paperwork.” Your response should be no less than 16 pages and no more than 24 pages.

FILE CHECKLIST and QUALIFICATIONS In addition to the Disciplinary Requirements in The Book of Discipline 2008, ¶330, you must complete the following:
*You must submit an Application for a change in relationship with the BOM Registrar by October 31. *You must have been a commissioned probationary deacon for at least two years prior to applying for change of status. *Further evaluation may be required concerning physical, mental and emotional health. The Board of Ordained Ministry expects you to take the initiative in securing forms and/or obtaining appropriate information.
