Overview of Northern Territory Pilot Project
Regional Snap Shot
The Katherine Region includes several aboriginal communities, a Defence Force Air Base and a robust tourist industry during the peak season May – September. It covers approximately 408,500 square kilometres and includes the Pine Creek area; it reaches from south of Kakadu National Park in the north, to the boundaries of the Alice Springs and Barkley Regions in the south, and from the Western Australian to Queensland borders. It covers approximately a quarter of the Northern Territory. The Katherine Region has significant occupation shortages in the broad Services industries as evidenced through the WorkForce NT report and a recent survey into skills shortages in the region. However, small and medium enterprises (SME) in the region have not taken up apprenticeships and anecdotally, there appears to be little interest from job seekers in apprenticeships as a viable pathway for employment.
The Pilot Model
In generating support for the combination traineeship it was critical to promote and educate local stakeholders on the benefits and responsibilities of Australian Apprenticeships generally, and the combined services model specifically. A diagram of the model can be seen on the following page (Figure 1.).
