Containers offer you the flexibility to have your garden wherever you want and they are also a great way to introduce children to gardening. Variety selection is extremely important when growing vegetables in containers. Varieties such as Derby Bush Beans, Peppi Cucumber, Tumbling Tom or Better Bush Tomato as well as any type of Lettuce or Pepper have a more compact growth habit and lend themselves well to being grown in containers. Also keep in mind the size of your container. Plants need room for their root system to spread out so always ere on the side of a little larger container. You can always plant smaller or trailing vegetables such as Lettuce and Cucumbers at the edge of your container to create a gorgeous combination. To keep your plants healthy and producing delicious vegetables, adequate water and fertilization is essential. Containers must have a hole in the bottom for good drainage and established plants will need to be watered approximately once per day. Natural fertilizers such at Garden-tone or Tomato-tone can be added into the soil at planting and in season according to package directions for optimal growth and production. Give your containers a new look this summer with vegetables! Check out our website, www.bordine.com for loads of great tips on Vegetable Gardening! New Varieties for 2009!
